Chronicles of Darkness: Hurt Locker

"Of course it hurts. Everything hurts. If you're alive, you hurt. Don't think of yourself as bleeding out; think of yourself as more alive."

Horror is all about the stakes. And most commonly, pain, injury, and death are those stakes. Hurt Locker is all about the stuff that hurts. We talk why it hurts, how it hurts, and how to deliver pain at your table beyond just rolling the dice and marking health boxes.

Hurt people hurt people. Weíre talking ramifications of violence and how pain perpetuates pain down the line. Weíre talking about how even after wounds heal, scars always remind you.

Hurt Locker features:

  • Treatment of violence in the Chronicles of Darkness. Lasting trauma, scene framing, and other tools for making your stories hurt.

  • Many new player options, including Merits, supernatural knacks, and even new character types like psychic vampires and sleeper cell soldiers.

  • Expanded equipment and equipment rules.

Hurt Locker requires the Chronicles of Darkness Rulebook or any other standalone Chronicles of Darkness rulebook such as Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Forsaken, or Beast: The Primordial to use.

I wonder why no one has come up with a game based upon the Underworld Movie Tetralogy. It has to be rich with character classes and motivations from Vamps, to Lycan to really nasty human orgs. Is it just me or do the possibilities seem endless? It can't be because of the Masquerade game, can it?

Loved the book, but ran into a rules error with two-weapon fighting. It lists an example of Katana and another weapon, but then says both weapons must be size 2 to use these abilities. The katana is listed as size three, and there is no "light swords" listed. Is there an errata?

Would it be possible to add the new Conditions described in the book to the Chronicles of Darkness - Condition, Numina and Dread Power Cards also available here on DrivethrougRPG?

Yeah, I'd buy that too. I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.

In the latest update, several glaring mistakes with the weapon chart have been fixed, however two were left over: Strength is still mispelled as Strenth, and according to the size chart, a small revolver is the size of a full sized sub machine gun, and a large revolver is the size of an assault rifle. Are these going to be fixed?

First I would say that there's a caveat that goes along with this. Some may disagree with my opinion; some may out-rightly dismiss my comments as not being germane. Their opinions are valid. Warranted... maybe not so much. But still valid.

While I love the new World of Darkness, and the more story-focussed approach to the chronicles, I have...issues with the approach and layout to the overall concept. To begin with, While combat is definitely illustrated to be a harrowing exercise for supernaturals - let alone the average person, some aspects are missing, to my mind. There is a lot of weight to being a combatant through Merits, and aspects in the body of the works.

However, in the search for a complete treatise on combat in the 2nd Edition, progresed from the first edition, some elements have either been forgotten, or overlooked. Firstly, there is little to no real treatment of firearms that I can really see. Plenty of "You Are A Tough Son of a XXX'. Yet given the powers...See more

There seems to be some mistakes in the equipment charts starting on page 133. (E.g: Initiative modifier and Strength Requirement for heavy revolver)
Are these going to be corrected in the near future? And do we get an updated pdf when that happens?

Thanks in advance

There's also the glaring mispelling of Strength as "Strenth", and it seems like the sizes of the revolvers and the sub machine guns directly below them were swapped (Lt revolver and Lt sub machinegun, hvy revolver and hvy sub machinegun.) Initiative for revolvers doesn't track with the rest of the section, and heavy revolver has swapped range and capacity so that it has a range of Low and a capacity of Long. So too with sub machineguns.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
