Jadepunk: Tales From Kausao City

Overthrow oppression in Jadepunk! You are the Jianghu – a loose society of likeminded, yet quarrelsome, individuals and organizations. Using powerful Jadetech devices and martial arts techniques, you stand against oppression and injustice. Though you are few, the Council fears you, for you have the most powerful weapon in Kausao City – the hearts and minds of the people. Unite them, and they will fight with you.

Jadepunk: Tales From Kausao City is a Fate Core roleplaying game about rebellious wuxia heroes in a fictional steampunk setting. Within its pages you will find:

  • An original setting that fuses the themes of Western steampunk and Asian wuxia.
  • The "Storytelling System" of creating character aspects that immerses them into the setting.
  • A comprehensive Asset system that lets you make any kind of device, martial arts technique, or companion you can imagine.
  • New dueling mechanics that use the contest system for fast and furious combat that won't have the rest of your group sitting idly by.
  • Streamlined rules for gamemasters that give them the power to create scenes on the fly with the use of the "Scene Fractal".
  • A new way of creating minor NPCs that takes no prep time. "Faces" give you everything you need to make an unimportant NPC feel alive and memorable.

What are you waiting for? The people call for warriors to champion them against the oppressive forces of the Council of Nine. Take up your Jadetech weapon, prime the engines on your airship, and lead the fight for justice!

Does this book include all the necessary Fate rules, or do you also need to reference the Fate Core book to play this one?

The book does contain all required rules but I still strongly suggest that you get the Fate Accelerated and Fate Core books first - considering that they're PWYW, that's not much of a problem budget-wise.

Jadepunk does change some rules, though (eg. Approaches become Professions) but it's still clearly Fate under the hood.

Two questions. One, I got this game in a Bundle of Holding years back, but it looks like it never got added to my DTRPG library. Is there any way to do that?

Two, how do you pronounce "Kausao"? ^_^; Both the au and ao look like they should sound like "ow", but also like they should sound different. My best guess is "caw-sow" (as in crow noise + female pig), but I was wondering about your intent.

It's a beautiful book. Well written and organized. I'm glad I picked it up. However it is a bit misleading calling it a "Fate Core" RPG. It's style is much closer to FAE. If you're looking for something more in the style of Fate Core then beware. I still think it was worth it.

I'm always on the look out for something to add to my Fate games. Some new mechanic I can steal or idea I can use as a jumping off point. I almost never use settings as is, and this is particularly true of Fate. I never played Fight Fire, but I stole the fire mechanics and made them zombies in my horror game. I never ran No Exit, but I used the ideas to write a Matrix-ish game. I never Ran Atomic Robo, Diaspora, or Starblazer, but I used bits and pieces of them all.

So, when I saw Jadepunk all I really wanted was the Asset system. I missed the Kickstarter, so I got to see people raving about it in a void, and decided then and there to use it for magic items in my Fate fantasy game (which worked beautifully by the way).

Then I read it. Sure, it had the system I wanted to steal, and it worked just like I had hoped, but it also had an incredibly interesting story outline. It's not super detailed, but it gives you what you need for inspiration, and in that way it works even better. I own...See more

Highly recommend the book, think it's an intriguing and compelled fusion setting with some great touches :)

Due to the delay with DTRPG approving the book, I bought mine through the official Jadepunk website. I was in on the first couple of playtests held through G+. I was super excited to see it come out and I did do up a review. Definitely a top notch product.

As a Kickstarter backer, I received this product (and a special thanks in the back of the book), so I may not be the world's most objective reviewer. I will say that this book has a really professional polish and deserves a look for people who like fanciful settings and cool new assets for Fate games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
