How Does One Measure a Hero?

By His Enemies.

Within these pages, you will find over 160 creatures for your Fate Core heroes to face, ranging from the mundane - bears, wolves, and sharks - to the truly monsters - demons, titans, and dragons.

In true Fate Core fashion, these creatures are presented with an eye toward dramatic use, with aspects, skills, stunts, and extras that guide their use not only in combat, but also as characters to interact with.  Your characters can strike a deal with a goblin trader, negotiate with a centaur tribe, frolic with fauns, or look for a way to lay an unfortunate shade to rest.

In addition, an appendix is presented with suggestions on using many of the creatures within as NPC companions for your PCs.

I just got my copy of this book in the mail.

I have been going through it. And I'm really pleased so far. It covers most of the iconic fantasy critters you might expect. And I am happy with what it presents.

I'm going to get good use out of this book.

It has been previously, and will be again! We're currently revising the book to update the layout and fix some errors, and so have turned off the ability to purchase the POD version until we have the new version ready. That should be in about 5 to 6 weeks now.

I noticed that the creature cards for FATE from Inkwell Ideas bear an uncanny resemblance to your book. Did you collaborate? I specifically looked at Dryad and Werewolf entries and they are direct copies. I haven't seen in the description of either products that your companies were working together?

We wrote the Fate Core stats for Inkwell's creature cards. We don't have any permanent arrangement with Inkwell, but they've asked us to stat their next set of Fate Core cards as well.

I noticed that as well. I assumed they both used the same source list of FATE stats. Having an open license for FATE and all. Nice to know who actually wrote those stats out. I think Inkwell is more about stock art than their writing, so it makes sense.

I noticed that the hamadryad has a stunt "poisoned dagger" that gives a weapon +2 with fight. The listing for this creature doesn't list fight. Do you just assume a fight of mediocre +1? Do you mean WL:2 or +2 fight?

Yes, unlisted skills default to mediocre (+0) in Fate Core.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
