About Heroic Maps

Our game boards were originally designed to be used with Heroquest.  That's why you'll notice we don't mark the doors or add furniture - you can put these wherever you want them, using you favourite system (paper or 3D).  This will mean the board can be different every time you use it. You can download our free door pack here:

Heroic Maps boards are flexible enough to be used with many game systems.

Heroquest players: Our boards are the size of half of the Heroquest board, so two placed together are a complete replacement for the original game board.  This means our maps provide a complete and ranging expansion for the classic dungeon crawl game!

I finally bought this and the Wilderness pack. After adding it to the cart, I got the recommendation list ("Customers who bought this, also bought..." etc) and so, without checking each pack individually, just added a whole slough it items:
Highway Core
Highway Features
Rivers Core
Village Core
Forest Paths.

Well, buyer beware - only the Forest Roads came grid free. The other ones just won't work for what I intended them for (a miniatures game sans grid with my son). In addition, "Forest Paths", which appeared to be the only "actual" forest, comes as a 10"x20" jpeg? I have no clue how I'm going to print this out - such a bummer. The quality of these items is nice, but I dropped $25 on stuff I cannot use at the moment.

Hello Gavin,

I'm sorry to read you were unhappy with your maps. Retro-fitting all of our products with gridless versions is a really overdue project of ours (everything released recently includes a gridless version). I had a grid-free copy of Highway Core ready to go, so have updated that file (please re-download the zip file from your account). I will sort out the others over the next few days - you should receive an email as each product is updated.

Please drop me a line using the 'Contact Publisher' (email) option on the right-hand panel of the product pages and I will try and sort out the Forest Paths 10x20 issue for you.

Thanks for the reply. There is no "Contact Publisher" option that I can see...only Publisher Ratings and Other Products :( Oh well, strange...

Hi Gavin,
You can email us then with heroicmaps*@gmail.com, but remove the '*' from the email address first. (Anti-spam measure). As a related point, we've now updated Highway core, Highway features, Rivers Core and Village Core with gridless full jpg versions, so hopefully you'll be able to use them fully now.

I'm very interested in these. I sold all my 28mm terrain because it took up too much room, but I'm reintroducing myself to it and thought this would be a great way to have cool looking maps to play on. One question I have: How do I print 10"x10" tiles? I have a great laserjet at work...am I going to need to invest in 11"x17" paper, or is there an easier way?

Hi Gavin,

When we print these ourselves, we take the full jpeg to a print shop and get it printed full size. Each 10″x 10″ fits on a sheet of A3/Ledger size paper. If your laserjet at work can print A3/Ledger you’re all set, otherwise it’s worth taking the files to a print shop. The default layout in the pdf is to split each 10"x10" tile into two 5"x10" sheets, which can be printed on A4/Legal size paper, and then put together.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
