"...the combat system is solid and fast paced and the whole thing screams out for some gonzo play....Murderhobos doesn't disappoint." -- Johua De Santo, Genius Loci review

"Best 6 pages of gaming I've read in awhile." -- Joe E on Google+

MurderHobos gets to the meat of dungeon crawling: killing things and taking their stuff.

Your character doesn't have Charisma or Wisdom. Your character has stats like Killing, Avoiding Being Killed, and Knowing Shit. The classes are things like Sneaky Bastard and Unhinged Priest. You roll a d20, add a few modifiers, and compare it to a target number.

But you will not be adventuring in an easy world where gold rains down on you from the heavens. No. Your weapons will break. Magical healing gets really weird, really fast. If you take more hits than your allowance, you die.

At least you heal up every day. Because you're a MurderHobo.

MurderHobos is a simple OSR game that hews closely to d20 mechanics. The stats are silly, but they do make a playable game.

Here's what you'll get:

  • A six-page PDF containing all the rules, with art by Khairul Hisham and Peter Seckler
  • A no-art .azw3 file for newer Kindles
  • A no-art .mobi file for older Kindles
  • A no-art .epub file for other eReaders

The System

Rolls are d20 + the relevant stat vs. a target difficulty number. If you roll above the difficulty, you succeed. If you roll equal to or 1 less, you get a partial success. If you roll less than that, you fail and the monster gets a free attack against you.

"Monsters don't attack. Instead, if you miss a Killing roll against a monster, it gets an attack against you." (This is from the game's webpage; it's not explicitly stated in the actual rules.)

Really? So, a band of murderhobos could stroll into a monster's lair and stand there going, "Neener neener can't touch us ha ha loser" as long as they don't attack it? I personally would allow monsters to attack on their turn, using this rule:

When a monster attacks a murderhobo, their player makes an Avoiding Being Killed roll vs 10 + the monster's Killing.

Monsters have a "hit difficulty." What is their Avoiding Being Killed rating used for? I guess you could use it if they happened to walk into a trap or something.

I think this a a cool little set of rules. I like to somehow adapt it's combat for use with old school D&D.

I'm sorry but I think the system imitates the Apocalypse Engine, but using a d20 instead 2d6. Anyway I will read before give my two cents about it. Good lucky for me!

I dig it. However, the thing with everything having gold, gold, gold! And that being the experience system as well isn't quite my thing. Other than that though, lots of great design ideas here.

Wow. Not keen on games that have to stoop to profanity in their descriptions. Just my personal preference.

Using profanity isn't stooping to anything. It's as valid a diction choice as any other. If it reinforces the tone of the work, then it should be used. The idea that a word that is used in a non-confrontational, non-discriminatory fashion is somehow lesser because it is "profane" (everyone should look up what that word actually means BTW) is absurd.

Because killing people and taking their stuff is okay, but killing people and taking their $h!t is not.

Todd's assessment is fair criticism.

But, Mr. Newhall should be credited for allowing the buyer to see what they are getting. Here, IMO, it's just used to be 'edgy' and/or as clickbait.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
