Silent Legions

The world is broken in hidden ways. The truth is concealed for the sake of mortal minds. The unendurable reality that boils behind the stars is veiled by the pleasant blindness that human sanity requires. Yet every comforting shroud must fall in time, and for these investigators, that time is now.

Silent Legions is a game of modern-day Lovecraftian horror, one carefully designed to support sandbox adventures by hard-bitten investigators and fearless hunters of the dark. Its clean, lightweight old-school rules are compatible with the free Stars Without Number sci-fi game and give both GM and players a steady framework for plumbing the unspeakable secrets of the eldritch night. Now, after a successful Kickstarter with more than 1,100 backers, a Kickstarter completed a month early, this tome of dark secrets can be yours.

Silent Legions isn't just about traditional Yog-Sothothery. Silent Legions is a creation kit, a toolbox in the Sine Nomine style for creating your own Mythos, with all-new deities, alien entities, foul magics, accursed artifacts, unaussprechlichen kulten, and diabolical dream-worlds to bedevil your players. These tools are system-neutral, so even fans of other Lovecraftian gaming systems can scoop them up to add a splash of fresh horror to their more familiar tentacular abominations.

Not only that, but Silent Legions is built to help the GM create investigative adventures with minimal strain. Within these pages you'll find a modular set of templates and adventure guides that help you snap together an evening's intrepid investigation and fit it neatly into your campaign setting. Like the Mythos creation tools, these guides are system-neutral and can be exported for any occasion when you need something wicked to this way come.

So seize now upon this opportunity! Plunder this vault of forgotten lore. Grasp these dark tools of creation and wield their power to fashion your own nightmarish reality. Perhaps none dare name the things that await your animating will, but soon enough the world will know them well….

Like this game and want more? Grab some more compatible games from Sine Nomine, like the free edition of the Stars Without Number sci-fi RPG, the post-apocalyptic wasteland adventures of Other Dust, or the Africana-inspired fantasy of Spears of the Dawn.

Just purchased the PDF and Hardcover, do the hyperlinks work? The ones from the table of contents do not, in the PDF file.

The art throughout is very condensed which is a shame since I've gone through the art pack and it's mostly good stuff. The recent WWN pdf I think shows that a balance can be struck between a reduced file size and the full .tif art pack images. It would do the pdf version and us pdf users alot of good. Thanks!

Can someone kindly explain to me how the name generator works?

the main thing confusing me, is that is says that one specific syllable structure is VC-V - this makes absolutely no sense to me as it creates 2 syllables? does this count as one or two of the rolled syllables? Sorry if im being dumb, but this is really frustrating me

I believe how it works is that you roll to find out the number of syllables and then roll for structure with each V (vowel) and C (consonant) being individual syllables. If you get a higher syllable number than the structure, like rolling a 6 and getting VC-V, then you repeat structure so its vowel, consonant - vowel vowel, consonant - vowel

Of course, as the game outright states in the name generator longer names will just sound like pure gibberish so I like to just use the structure to determine the length of the name. Hope that helps!

Is anyone else having problems opening this pdf on an android device?(Mine is a Galaxy tab4 if that's important.)
Tried several apps and they all just crash.
I've also tried downloading the file a few times in case of a corrupt file, but no luck.
Works fine on PC however.

This game is great -- using the GM-side to create sandboxes for other systems (CoC, ToC Cthulhu Dark, CthulhuPunk, D&D) is great. Using the player side to play scenarios made for other systems (D&D, ToC, CoC etc) also work great.
Using both with each other is of course also great.

Honestly my favorite half of it is the GM (Keeper) side. I'm not that hot on the "template" idea but even without it there are many great GM resources here.

I've used Silent Legions to run published Call of Cthulhu adventures. System conversion is a snap and this really adds to Silent Legion's overall utility. Not only can Silent Legion's many charts and inspirational tools for the GM be used for any system (such as Call of Cthulhu), but Call of Cthulhu adventures can be brought right over into the Silent Legions system with very little fuss. It's wonderful.

I would love to buy this book in hardcover if they would improve the cover art. It's terrible!

True, the art is not comparable to a number of rpg products...but the text itself, ideas presented, the game system, the GM tools to create Lovecraftian adventures...is pure gold. I can overlook questionable art for the pure 'wow' factor of Crawford's written work here. I did purchase the PDF + Hardcover option, just so I could have a sturdy hardback on the bookshelf and work off of a PDF for utility's sake. A second printing with different art would be very tempting.

Are there any guides or similar things out there that help with combining this with the other SWN games? Specifically stuff around the faction turns!

Not really, though there is a chapter in the book about conversion when it comes to character creation and madness, but I don't think there is any faction rules.

I am curious mechanically, how compatible are all of your OSR games?

Silent Legions, Other Dust, Stars Without Number, and Spears of the Dawn all share the same system, albeit with a few genre tweaks for the individual games. Scarlet Heroes uses its own system built for one-on-one gaming, but even there, it remains basically compatible with the SWN series, trading the skill system for "traits" and using a slightly different system for saves.

I think think something might be choked with so many discount codes being redeemed for this PDF at the same time. If any backers can't get their hands on the PDF, just drop me a note through Kickstarter and I'll hand-email you a link to the PDF.

That's another problem. I see "You have purchased this product," but no "Click to download." I had to go back into My Orders, find it there, and download it using the classic interface. Very annoying, DTRPG ...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
