The Rabbit Playing Game

STOP...before buying this you should know, there is now a 2nd edition of this game.  The new edition has an entirely different minimalist core game system, and contains a setting and 2 adventures.  If you want a classic "old school" type system, this 1st edition might be right for you...if you want a quicker, easier, and simpler system for one shot games, take a look at the 2nd Edition preview.

The Rabbit Playing Game is a fantasy role playing game Inspired by Richard Adams’ novel Watership Down and other RPGs that have emulated this genre.

Players take on the role of rabbits in our real world, your rabbit character thinks with human-like Cleverness.  Well, you think like a human thinks a rabbit would think anyway.  You can use and manipulate items around you to your advantage, and carry a few items snug in your fur or in a small woven backpack, but other than that you are simply a rabbit trying to survive in a hostile world.

The Rabbit Playing Game uses traditional old school type mechanics inspired by the earliest RPGs.  The goal was to develop a simple familiar feeling, yet comprehensive set of rules that can be learned very quickly.  While concise, you will find them extremely versatile and able to satisfactorily handle most situations with a minimum of confusion or guesswork.

Hi David,
This is a great little game - I enjoyed reading it very much and look forward to trying it out.
Two quick questions:
1. On the Rabbit Character Advancement Table (p. 12) under Special Abilities, what does the +3 represent for Level 7 or is that a typo?
2. Same table under Hit Dice: Is this how Hit Dice advancement Hit Point calculation by level works - 1d10+moxie at 1st level, then add moxie to the total HP on even numbered levels and add another 1d10 to the HP total on odd levels?
Thanks!

Thanks Joseph, I hope you have as much fun with the game as I do.

Woops! Yep, that's a typo (darn it!) It should simply read "Nil" at that level (I'd fire my proofreader, but...well, it's me ;)). You have it exactly right on hit points. :)

Is this a "retro-clone" of 'Bunnies & Burrows'?

Short answer: No it's not (although the colors I decided to use in the cover are a fun little homage to the game).

It is a game primarily inspired by Watership Down, and designed to play similar adventures. This game takes a handful of the ideas that were pretty neat in B&B and places them into a custom game system that is both modern, but still takes its cue from the solid core mechanics of old school games (It's not retro "D20" but people who enjoy that game system will find the ideas very familiar).

I wanted to go light enough that it could be quickly played by anyone, but I didn't want to go too narrative, and wanted to add enough "game crunch" to make it a viable game for short campaigns. In a nutshell, Watership Down is great and I couldn't count the number of times I've seen people looking for a game to cover the genre, but one that had mechanics more friendly to modern gamers than B&B. When I decided to revisit the genre in my own games, I was also...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
