Futuristic/Science Fiction Map Symbols/Icons (Any Editor)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Need more map items/symbols/icons for your game maps?  Include this set of 200 futuristic map images in your image library!  Art by amazing artist/cartographer Robert Altbauer.

These are created as transparent PNG images.  They were made for the Dungeonographer map software (it has a free version limiting you to adding 10 custom icons as well as other minor limits and a paid version), but they are transparent PNGs which should be compatible with most image & map editors. Each image is designed on a scale to be printed at 300dpi.  (An object that would be 5' long is 300 pixels long.  This ensures they will print crisply.  But they will still look good if printed/viewed at a smaller size.)

You may publish maps using these icons--see the license below. The "cover" image is a thumbnail/contact sheet showing the small versions of the images included.

Note: City building icon, dungeon icon and world map icon sets are also on sale.

Full size samples:

To use these in Dungeonographer:

  1. Go to the "Map Items" tab of a map you are editing.
  2. Scroll down in the bottom section and look for a "Import Custom Map Item" or "Mass Custom Import Map Items" button.
  3. Use the file chooser to select the file (or for the mass import select a folder of files).
  4. If importing a single image, you may select an alternate icon for a line art style icon.  These icons do not have line art versions, so leave this blank and the color art will be used instead.
  5. The new map items should be added to the end of the list of map items when you finish.

Index of Inkwell Ideas Map Icons:

Each month we've made 4 mini-sets of icons (battlemat, classic world/kingdom, isometric world/kingdom, & settlement) following a theme such as "Greek" or "Elven" or "Temples".

Each year we've bundled up each monthly mini-set of that style:

Battlemat
(dungeon/building interiors)

Classic
World/Kingdom

Isometric
World/Kingdom

Settlement
(mostly top-down buildings)

The monthly sets are also available, but from 2020 onward each month's icons are only availaible as one combined product. (The "Coasts" set from February 2022 has all the battlemat, classic & isometric world/kingdom, and settlement icons in one product/download.) February/March 2023's icon set is a little different--it has 100's of icons in only a "Ring Lord" world/kingdom map style.

"You may publish maps using these icons--see the license below." However, the description doesn't actually mention any details on the license. Can you clarify under what conditions these icons can be used?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
