Monster Force Terra is a light storygame using the Apocalypse World Engine to tales of giant monsters who terrorize the Earth but also just happen to save the human race from an even worse threat in the process!

You take on the roles of the kaiju in this game, going about your own business of seeking food, shelter and a mate, when disaster strikes! In getting back to the normal order of your lives, you inadvertently find yourselves becoming the heroes, though you may never be aware of what you've done. Play your monster as a pawn in the story, using them to achieve the goals that you want, by using them to stomp, steal or investigate the story's obstacles.

The download includes twelve different monster playsheets:

  • The Avian: a giant flying creature.
  • The Bug: a giant insect.
  • The Critter: a giant mammal.
  • The Crustacean: a giant crab or lobster.
  • The Digger: a giant burrower.
  • The Glob: a giant mess.
  • The Lizard: a giant scaly creature.
  • The Mech: a giant robot.
  • The Plant: a giant vegetable.
  • The Simian: a giant ape-like creature.
  • The Swarm: a giant colony life-form.
  • The Unspeakable: a giant horror.

There are also two other files:

  • Monster Force Terra: the core rule booklet, a mere 10 pages long, including tips for the MC on running the game.
  • Reference Sheet: print this on the back of the playsheets.

The Lizard's move "XXX Attack" says "you can Smash with 1 AP". What is an AP?

Sorry, that's me taking PbtA terminology for granted: 'AP' is 'Armor Piercing', so the Lizard gets to ignore 1 level or Armor on its target when it makes this move.

Yes, but there is no armour in this game. Monsters have about 5 life points and the standard damage is 1.

I've added a new paragraph to the rules about making use of armour in the game and reworded the Lizard's 'XXX' move to better explain how it works.

Aww, thanks for the clarification, that makes sense now. I want to organise a small game of this, will tell you about the outcome.

Thanks for pointing out the oversight and please do let me know how the games goes; if you use Discord, I'm about there most days and know a few other players who are always up for any kind of PbtA gaming.

Actually, I have little time these days and I mainly play through web. I am Spanish so I will need some translation (hope that is ok). Anyway, I will prepare it calmly. My nick in discord is G-Master, will be easier to speak through that.

Hello, it's been a while and interesting times but I managed to run a game of this.
The monsters were lured to Osaka by evil Doctor Infierno who wanted to use them to create his own mega-kaiju.
The monsters were Gran Dolgoro (giant lizard), Chemozoon (the blob), Utan Rakshasa (all of Sumatran Jungle is a massive organism) and the Swarm (billions of bees looking for their queen).
It was fun: the city ended destroyed by the explosion of Infierno's Robot and later changed to a huge jungle where the monsters roamed. The blob divided itself in two. I asked players to create the movies where their characters had appeared.
The system works well but there are a couple of remarkable points:
-Armour makes a huge difference. If someone is armoured, is almost unbeatable. On the other side, it gains no fury.
-Both, players and I, found quite hard to find reasons for teaming up with each other. Different targets make them go every man for himself which makes mandatory to create massive...See more

I'd like to see this in a better format also. Profile format is easiest for printing out... IMHO.

I like the game! I assume the pages are out of order for printing purposes but I can not figure out how to print it properly. Also how do the monsters cooperate when they have such base instincts. Gonna play a trial game with just my wife and maybe write a review.

Sorry for the formatting of the pdf, I'll create some easier-to-use documents and alternative presentations when I have time.

The monsters don't cooperate as such, but the players do: it's up to the players and MC to arrange the moves of the monsters in such a way that they advance the plot unwittingly. Think of them as a force of nature or deus ex machina, only the whole story uses them as plot devices, not just one bit at the end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
