Journey into the volcanic lair of a dragon to defend the city of Palanthus. Run a merry chase over hill and heath in search of a lost boy—can you find Master Lor before the other, more sinister searchers? Travel to the far-away isle of Mithas and save the remnants of a dying race of bird-men from the savage minotaurs, while simultaneously trying to thwart a massive invasion of Ansalon.

The World of Krynn beckons to you; return to adventure once again in the world of fearsome dragons and vile draconians.

Product History

DL16: "World of Krynn" (1988), by Michael Gray, Harold Johnson, and Douglas Niles, is the sixteenth in the Dragonlance "DL" series of adventures. It was published in December 1988.

Concluding the "DL" Series. Like its immediate predecessor, DL15: "Mists of Krynn" (1988), "World of Krynn" is an anthology of Dragonlance adventures. However, unlike its predecessor, it's much more coherent: there are just four adventures and they're all set in the same time period, after the War of the Lance.

Also unlike its predecessor, "World of Krynn" was largely produced by members of the "Dragonlance series design team". Editor Mike Breault and authors Harold Johnson and Douglas Niles were all important members of this team, which produced Dragonlance supplements from 1984-1987. As a result, "World of Krynn" had the potential to be more canonical than the previous "Mists of Krynn" … but it didn't turn out that way.

"World of Krynn" was also the last book in the "DL" series — marking the end of TSR's longest running adventure series ever. This was a result of AD&D 2e (1989) being just around the corner, and most of TSR's lines being revamped as a result.

Expanding the World of Krynn. "World of Krynn" was the adventure that really advanced Dragonlance into a more consistent and coherent era beyond the War of the Lance. "The Chronology of Krynn" in Dragon #224 (December 1995) later placed it in 354-358 AC, making it contemporary with the Time of the Twins (1986) novel and the later DLT1: New Tales: The Land Reborn (1993).

"The Tower of Kyrie" by Douglas Niles probably contains the most interesting material for the Dragonlance canon. It extensively details the island of Mithas, and so gives more attention to the minotaurs, who also appeared in "Mists of Krynn". More importantly, it provides the first detailed information on the kyrie. They'd appeared in one sentence in DL12: "Dragons of Faith" (1986), but now this unique Krynn race got a better chance to shine.

On the other hand "Dargaard Keep", by Michael Gray, has been declared largely non-canonical. It contains nice maps of Lord Soth's home, which have been retained, but everything else has been thrown out from Dragonlance's official storyline. This may in part be due to the adventure's extensive use of traditional AD&D monsters, including lycanthropes which are otherwise unknown on the world. However, it's largely because Gray dictated the final fates of a few Dragonlance characters in a way that TSR later regretted: not only do players get the chance to release Lord Soth from his cursed existence, but they also discover that Kitiara has been raised as a penanggalan.

Monsters of Note. There's also a tarrasque in Lord Soth's basement, which clearly can't be canon or it would have changed the entire War of the Lance! This bit of silliness was one of three appearances of AD&D's most infamous monster in the 1e era (1977-1989). Tarrasque fans may find the other two in H2: "The Mines of Bloodstone" (1986) and H4: "The Throne of Bloodstone" (1988) — both coauthored by Douglas Niles. Apparently the late '80s was a good time to be a tarrasque lover!

Future History. With the advent of AD&D 2e (1989), TSR started releasing adventures in storybook trilogies. Dragonlance's next supplements were thus the "DLE", beginning with DLE1: "In Search of Dragons" (1989). Meanwhile, TSR was also already planning their next big Dragonlance supplement, Time of the Dragon (1989)

About the Creators. Though Gray had previously written for the "Fantasy Forest" line, this was his only D&D publication. Meanwhile, Johnson and Niles were both experienced members of the Dragonlance team, making a return visit.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
