Warriors of the Red Planet

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

WARRIORS OF THE RED PLANET is a game of classic pulp, of “Sword & Planet” science-fantasy. If your tastes run towards flashing swords and pistols against a backdrop of alien vistas, soaring airships, and lost civilizations on far-away worlds then this is the game for you.

This roleplaying game is intended to evoke the worlds, as well as the “style” presented in the Martian, Venusian, and other Sword & Planet works of Burroughs, Moorcock, Kline, Vance, and others where no race, creature, or device is too fantastic. Heroic men and women struggle against devious warlords and mad Scientists, and against the ravages of time eroding the frayed edges of their civilizations. The rules presented here are intended to be either a complete game, in and of itself, or to serve as a companion to other fantasy games. They are resources for Referees to pick and choose from, whichever suits their fancy.

The rules are based, in their most basic form, on the original fantasy roleplaying game, and all elements are intended to be mostly compatible with that system, its successive editions and versions, and with other “old-school” “retro-clones” like Colonial Troopers, Guardians, and others.

DriveThru is upgrading the paper they use so the POD books are in revision. The whole process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months in my experience. You can check the NightOwlWorkshop website for updates.

@ Thomas D, I just saw your Gunslinger kickstarter and I'm intrigued. Can you provide any insight into how that would fit with a different old school clone system such as OSE and/or Labyrinth Lord?
I see very good comments about Warriors of the Red Planet but I don't need yet another new ruleset at this point.

Gunslinger is very similar to OSE and Labyrinth Lord and Swords & Wizardry, with just a few optional rules pulled in from 5th edition and Boothill. It is meant to be fully playable with Warriors of the Red Planet.

Why is the PDF/Printed combo so expensive? Disappointing.

I'd love to purchase the printed books, with the pdf's, but the price tacked on for the pdf's seems steep. Hate the idea of not getting a digital backup. This has prevented me from purchasing any of your titles for some time. I'm especially interested in this title, because it is a rarely sourced genre, and according to reviews you've done it extremely well. Hope the price for a digital backup can come down someday.

It's a real gem in my opinion. The writer did an amazing job and really has extensive knowledge of the genre, and somehow boiled it all down into a succinct book. It was a delight to edit it and draw the illustrations (I'm more of an artist, though I write & design too).

No plans to lower prices as it continues to sell very well, and I split the earnings. It was a labor of love and took a lot of time and work, and I'd like to be able to make more stuff for it.

Understood. It looks like a great product. I'll have to decide on one format or the other.

Hi! Is there a difference between the Lulu print version and the drivethru print version, either in content or quality?

No difference in content. As for quality the books appear nearly identical side by side. Maybe images are a tad sharper and gray tones a little smoother on Lulu, but it's hard to tell.

This game re-invigorated my love for the hobby. Returning me to my younger days, when iI read the John Carter comics. Now this fire burns in me and it makes me smile. And although I love the hobby, and am somewhat wel informed? This is the game that brought all that youthful joy back to me and is the one I am more than willing to put time into. Serious time.

Great little game. But one BIG question. Where are the Calots (Martian Dogs)? You have pictures of them all over the book, but no stats. One of my prospective players wants a Calot.

You're right! I didn't even notice it was missing until I tried converting a Princess of Mars into an adventure and went to reference them for Woola's stats. So I wrote them up, you can find them here: https://dungeoneering.blogspot.com/2020/05/a-princess-of-mars-adventure-chapter-6.html

It's a great little game, but the 2019 update has somehow altered the quality of every image in the book. Whereas in the previous version they were all crisp and clear, the current version has images that are either very blurry, or have heavy artifacts that (they look like black smudges). The modified typography is an improvement, as are some of the changes in the text itself (character creation, for example now aligns with the example character), it's just the images that took a real hit in overall quality.

I'm curious just how versatile this system is? Like, say, could it be re-tooled to run a Star-Wars type game, or other types of science fantasy? I'm similarly curious about Raiders! and Colonial Troopers, if they can be used for general hard/semi-hard sci-fi and early 20th century pulp, or if they're focused in on specific sub-genres.

I bought Guardians and was highly pleased by how easy the rules appear to be able to fit genres other than 70s-80s Marvel/DC comic book super heroes, and I intend to buy the rest of the line regardless of how narrow their scope is. I'm just curious.

Also there're rules for Space Combat right?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
