Runaway Hirelings (Original)

“You followed the heroes through the dungeon, watched them slay monsters and collect treasures. Then they finally met their match, they killed the biggest baddie, but they died too. So now it’s just you, the guys who carry stuff; and you have to make it out of a deadly dungeon full of weird creatures, traps, and fungi. But hey, you get to keep all the treasure… yay..?”

Runaway Hirelings is a nano Tabletop Role-Playing Game about hirelings whose employers have perished, leaving them stranded deep in a dangerous dungeon filled with traps.

This game is meant for pick-up and play sessions. When a Player can’t come because he drank expired cola, bring this game out and play until you're bored! The game ends whenever you want it to, since the dungeon is created room by room as you play; the next doorway can always be the surface. So if you are running out of time, playthrough (2) more rooms. If everyone wants to do something else, have this room be the last!

And what about these rooms? They are created by everyone at the table! The Game-Master (it doesn’t take as much effort as you think it does in this game) asks Players about each room when it is entered (“What catches your eye first as you step up to the Shrieking Stage?”). This is done for many details; it is encouraged that everyone helps build this dungeon.

But how do you decide what room is what? Well, the GM may decide or he may take turns with the Players around the table. And there is a list of 20 dungeon room titles to use; with classics like:

  • The Acid Fang Snake Habitat
  • Possibly Hallucinatory Mushroom Spore Cavern
  • “This Room Will Eat You”

Playing the game is easy, no checks just questions that bring dark comedic flashbacks of heroes and hirelings fleeing slimey floors and spikey walls.

So break this out when no one wants to play the campaign today.
Break this out when you just want to go full hireling.
This is a ridiculous game.

Scenario from a new angle. Most or all of the rooms they have supposedly been through, so it is up to the players to say what is in it or where from their "memories". [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
