Lost Mine of Phandelver is an adventure for four to five characters of 1st level. During the course of the adventure, the characters will advance to 5th level. The adventure is set a short distance from the city of Neverwinter in the Sword Coast region of the Forgotten Realms setting. The Sword Coast is part of the North--a vast realm of free settlements surrounded by wilderness and adventure.

Dungeon Masters purchasing this module can use it to run the adventure with very little prep, other than reading through the adventure in advance. The contents of the story are indexed and linked, where appropriate. Combat encounters and boxed text are preloaded and ready to drop onto maps and into the chat window with a few clicks. Nearly everything has been optimized and streamlined for ease of play online.

This Module Includes

  • the entire contents of the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure
  • image handouts that can be shared with players collectively or individually
  • 5 pregen characters that your players can choose when joining the campaign
  • maps containing information for the Dungeon Master (DM) only and with all locations pre-linked to story entries which may contain additional DM notes, boxed text, encounters, images and treasure parcels
  • maps with all hidden information removed and resized for use as tactical combat maps
  • tokens for most of the monsters in the module. When no token is available, a letter token is used to represent the NPC
  • XP for quests and encounters that can be dragged to the party sheet and awarded to the players as they complete them
  • Searchable monster indexes by CR, type and in alphabetical order

The price and lack of PDFs are an insulting combination. I'm not buying a single one of these modules until they're available in a non-DRMed easy-to-use format. I'm not paying money to deal with this garbage. (That is, DRM - not Fantasy Grounds. I have no beef with FG. I'd use them if they weren't so resource-intensive. My laptop just lags horribly with their software.)

Just as a warning, I missed it because it is kind of buried in the middle of the description around where I stopped reading, you have to have a subscription to the FantasyGrounds application to use this. It's $40 normally for a basic subscription, which kind of sucks since the items are all a bit expensive on their own. Also, the manual says you should be asked to provide your FantasyGrounds username when the product is bought from other retailers, but I never was. Not sure how I'm going to deal with that.

Hello Joshua, yes, since these are add-ons for Fantasy Grounds, you will need either a 1-time license (the $39 option) or either of the two subscription options ($3.99/mo for the standard or $9.99/mo for the Ultimate.) Standard is a 1-seat license. Ultimate is a table license that covers your players as well. We have a free 30-day trial for each of the two subscriptions.

Quick thing though; again the manual states that when buying it from a third party, I should have had some point to put in my Fantasy Grounds information, so I could be licensed for it. I was never asked for anything like that, which makes sense because I didn't have one at the time.

I think there were some issues early on when these were first set up where it didn't ask for the forum username. You can email support@fantasygrounds.com and send a receipt and the FG forum username and we can always link it up after the fact.

I emailed them like you said and have not gotten a response for the past 5 days. This is getting a little frustrating for a product I've paid so much for.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
      Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
