Storypath System Preview

The evolution of the Storypath system is tied to our work on the Trinity Continuum, a world of hope, heroism, and peril, and Scion, a world where the children of the old gods walk the earth.

Early on, we found that both new editions of these games had similar system needs, because their characters are larger-than-life and fight in epic battles on a grand scale. We knew we needed a system that could accommodate everyday citizens on the street, superheroes soaring above skyscrapers, and gods of the sun and sky, but we also wanted rules to help facilitate the connection between the player-characters, their organizations (Allegiances for Trinity and Pantheons for Scion), and their values.

To move forward, however, we needed to take a step back, because the first editions of the Trinity Continuum and Scion used custom variants of the Storyteller System which powered Vampire: The Masquerade and other classic White Wolf games. Despite the differences between those variants, however, at its core the Storyteller System was designed chiefly as a horror game for creatures that could be effectively fought by human opponents. In other words, the Storyteller System is great for vampires, but it didn’t excel at portraying superheroes…or gods! To us, this meant that the stories of these action-adventure games were hindered by their original systems.

The Storypath System was designed as a new set of rules, inspired by the legacy of the Storyteller and Storytelling Systems, in addition to other story-centric rules. The Storypath System keeps the focus on narrative, story-built play, and action-adventure. It also draws inspiration from a number of other influences that focus on a cinematic high-octane action and storytelling, as well, to create a streamlined experience for epic stories.

Within these pages, you’ll find a preview of the rules and examples for both Scion and the Trinity Continuum. We hope you enjoy the new Storypath System and are inspired to roll the dice and tell great stories!

In addition to what others have said, I see influence from the Fantasy Age system with the stunts. And that is my biggest concern about these new releases, though I am mainly concerned about Scion. In the past games by White Wolf and now Onyx Path have favored incredible detail, I am looking at you Battle Wheel, Charm System, and all of Mage. And while those examples are not negative they do characterize what I have always perceived as a go big mentality.

This brings me to my concern, that when these books come out we will get a twenty page list of stunts. I like to think I have decent memory, but a twenty page list of stunts? Yikes. The scenarios of okay lets stop play so player 1 can look up that stunts they want to play or lets stop play again so I can look up a stunt rule to make sure it is being used properly, seem inevitable and frequent if we get so many, or such a detailed list, of stunts. I am hoping that they do something similar to Fantasy Age and have a small list of stunts for...See more

System has a base from Chronicles of Darkness (witch I really like) with some nice additions and heavily influenced by FFG Star Wars and Fate.

Feels like where NWO alway was..
Meaningless and shallow.
Also that terrible dice system is still there.

This preview is very interesting. So far, the system looks like the bastard child of the Storyteller System and FATE system. And it may have been raised by the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars system. I will be looking forward to the Storypath System releases.

The very little bit here is very promising and intriguing. Among other things, I see influence from both Fate present in at least the Health and the investigation systems as well Complications and a brief mention of a situation where the results of multiple rolls determines the overall success (sounding very much like a Fate Core Challenge). I also noted some hint of a GUMSHOE influence in the mention of Core Clues in the Intrigue play example.

Also, the inclusion of shapeshifting and illusions in the PC examples makes me very excited since these are powers that I felt were too difficult to acquire given their frequency of appearance in ancient myths.

About the only thing that could be making me more excited is if one of the sample characters had been a gorgon. I can say right now, the first character I try to make when Scion 2e comes out is a heroic gorgon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
