Kaigaku brings dramatic samurai action back to your tabletop! It's based on the innovative Black Hack rules set originally created by David Black. This game is easy to learn and you can get a party of characters created and a game started in just minutes.

This samurai RPG allows you to become a mighty bushi, a devious courtier, a stealthy ninja or a powerful ascetic martial artist and defend the realm of Kaigaku from threats of monsters, foreign invasion and internal strife.

This book presents you with a fully fleshed-out game setting that's detailed enough to jumpstart your imagination but light enough so you can make the stories that you want to tell.

Customize your characters with their own  skills and samurai school abilities to help
them stand apart from the rest and to  have the power they need to defeat their
enemies.

You can check out the free version of Kaigaku before you purchase the premium version. The differences are that the free version has only 8 ryu (samurai schools) compared to the 26 in the premium book, plus less setting material. The premium version is professionally edited, has a better layout and gorgeous artwork.

Don't take my word for it. Here's what other people are saying:

"If I had to say one thing about Kaigaku, it would be this: If I were to convert Jadepunk to d20, I'd start with Kaigaku and hack from there. It's that good!"

-Ryan M. Danks, Jadepunk

"If you are a fan of pseudo-Japanese settings and OD&D you should definitely check out Jacob Ross’ game. It has a couple of interesting mechanics and a setting you can easily use as the basis for your campaign. If I ever run a samurai-style game in the future I’ll definitely use Kaigaku for it!"

-Michael Wolf, Stargazer's World Blog

Make sure to check out The Ruined Kingdom, now on Kickstarter, to see the next big supplement for Kaigaku. This campaign expands the world and brings the PCs to the fearsome steppe riders of Kherin, the Hashishin and dervishes of the Achaem Dynasty and the faded glory of the dying kingdom of Tian. There are plenty of new beasties to fight and character options for playing members of the new nations

This is the Deal of the Day (7/18/2017), but the discounted price is the same as the standard price. Was this an oversight, or is it just being advertised via the Deal of the Day, with no actual discount?

Huh. So this site is supposed to automatically discount the Deal of the Day. I went ahead and manually changed it to half off. Thanks for letting me know.

Any chance of a printer friendly version with the page backgrounds turned off? I only print sections for my game table but the background takes a lot of ink.

That's a pretty reasonable request. Lemme see what I can do. It's only a matter of finding the time.

I want this, but $25 for a 72 page PDF feels steep. Is there a particular reason the cost is so high?

25 bucks for the print version. Also includes the PDF. 10 bucks if you want just the PDF.

Sorry, you're right.

But still, $25 for 72 pages feels like a lot. If the whole book is full color and full-page, that's totally worth it. Just curious.

It's that high because of print costs. The entire book is full color and full page. The margins are a bit smaller than is standard, which results in more text on each page. I checked and it's something like 1,000 words (500 words is a traditional page), which means that if you don't count space taken up by art and the occasional negative space to break up text sections this book would be at least 100 pages, possibly approaching 120.

I have a question regarding armor as written in the book. In several places Tatami Armor is mentioned, however, it is never explicitly stated (at the time nor in the equipment list) if Tatami Armor is light, medium, or heavy armor.

I can infer that in one case it is light since it is describe as "concealable" but could I get some clarification on this? Thank you.

It is light. Thanks for pointing that out!

I opened it with Adobe. The first time I downloaded it the file size was only 30kb. I downloaded it again and got a more normal sized file, but that was also corrupted.

Hm, that 30k thing seems like it might be a problem on Drivethru's end. I tinkered with the PDF and uploaded a new one, through. Try that.

You are right Jacob, the problem is Drivethru, I've gotten files from 30K up to 12 mb, but the never the full size. In fact, I even tried to upload to my dropbox, but to no avail :(

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
