“I’m getting a signal.” Dalil’s voice crackled over the com. “We’re close.” The navigator gazed into the darkness ahead, his face ghostly pale in the cold glow from the tabula in his hands.

Radwa nodded silently for her comrades to advance, approaching the strange ruins in the moonscape. The only sound they could hear was their own breathing through the air filters, and the soft crunch under their boots. The floodlights from the freighter Narzalus behind them cast long shadows of the trio.

“Something is wrong, boss.” The sharp voice of Jhara broke the silence. Her vulcan rifle hummed as the tall woman from Sadaal activated her weapon. Without turning, Radwa raised her hand to still her friend.

“Easy, Jha,” she whispered over the com.

The explorers shone their suit-mounted flashlights over the ruins. Alien signs were carved into the smooth dark surfaces. In the light, they seemed to be glowing.

Something slowly unraveled before them. A darkness rose from the surface of the dead moon, reaching towards the starry sky above them.

“Mercy of the Icons!” Radwa gasped, and felt a chill spread throughout her body.

Coriolis – The Third Horizon is a science fiction role-playing game from the makers of critically acclaimed Mutant: Year Zero (six-time nominee and winner of a Silver Ennie for Best Rules 2015).

Features:

  • Create your unique player character – including skills, talents, gear and relationships – in mere minutes.
  • Fight fast and furious battles, praying to the Icons to overcome your enemies.
  • Build and crew your own spaceship, to explore the many star systems of the Third Horizon.
  • Experience thrilling spaceship duels, using a game system that puts all player characters at the heart of the action.
  • Take part in the intrigue between powerful factions on the majestic space station Coriolis.
  • Uncover the mysteries of the Third Horizon, a rich tapestry of cultures that have settled the stars.

“The game's authors describe it as ‘Arabian Nights in space’ and it fulfills that brief marvelously. Style 5/5, Substance 5/5.”

The rules look to be a big improvement over Mutant Year Zero. The game world for the Third Horizon is very well described and interesting.

This would make a beautifully rendered book... but it makes a crap PDF.

It's just too big.

There are a Table of Contents, and an Index, but they aren't hyperlinked, so they are a lot less useful than they could be.

I tried the PDF in five different readers: Moon+, Foxit, Sumatra(PC), EZ PDF, and Adobe Reader. Bookmarks only worked in Adobe and EZ PDF. In all of the readers it took between three and eight second to load a page. Once a page was loaded response times were better but still _slow_.

Honestly, if I drop $25 on a PDF, I expect it to load quickly, have working bookmarks, and be fully hyperlinked.

You guys really need to give DTRPG coupons for the game to your KS backers who have it on PDF already, so we can actually rate and review the product on here and help spread the word about how awesome this game is. Only 5 ratings and 2 official reviews is scandalous! Same goes for the Atlas.

How extensive is the "watermarking" in the .pdf? Does it inhibit relying on the .pdf for running the game, and/or for printing select pages? Thanks...

When DriveThru indicates a 'watermarked PDF' it basically means that your name and order number will appear in the bottom corner of each page (or maybe just the left-hand pages, I can't recall) throughout the PDF. Some publishers do this prevent piracy/file-sharing.

Great - thanks for that helpful clarification. Much more benign than I'd feared!

One last question, I see this system uses a card deck. Are these cards required or will a standard card deck work, but just not look as cool? :)
Customer avatar
Luke W March 07, 2017 8:38 am UTC
They are not required. But they can't be replicated by normal cards.

Does this system and Mutant Year Zero share the same d6 dice mechanic?
Customer avatar
Luke W March 07, 2017 8:39 am UTC
They are similar but Coriolis doesn't have different results on a 1 depending on the source of the dice. Overall Coriolis feels more streamlined.

Quick question - can a ship be operated normally if your party has just 2 guys in it?

Hi! There are special rules for small crews in Chapter 7 of the rulebook. :)

It would be great if a Low Quality file of the rulebook was added.
The rulebook pdf is rather heavy on the resources if used on an old Pad.

I got this as a KS backer, but only because one of my group wanted me to run it. So I read it without prejudice, and this is my unbiased review. In comments because I didn't purchase it on DriveThru

This is an English Language version of a Swedish game, published by Fria Ligan, a company set up when the original developers of the first version of Coriolis folded. Fria Ligan are gamers and part-time developers/publishers, who include a surgeon, and the artist of the moment Stålenhag. Though set up to support Coriolis, their first ruleset was Mutant Year Zero, later published in English by Modiphius. This English language version of Coriolis is also distributed in partnership with Modiphius.

It's a big book at 388 pages. I'm not entirely convinced by full colour layout of text heavy books - I prefer white pages, but the design isn't over-fussy, and despite the text being held in graphic frames, it's very readable.

The usual what is an RPG gumph is followed by a section titled...See more

Is the PDF for the core rulebook any different than the one that was released for Kickstarter backers? And if so, will Kickstarter backers be receiving the updated PDF free? (I'm asking because I was a backer.)

Also, I LOVE this game and would rate and review it with 5 stars if I could, but unfortunately this site doesn't let you unless you purchase the product through them. :/

Oops! I found out today that there was an e-mail that provided the updated books to backers already, but somehow I didn't get mine or maybe deleted it by accident. Not to worry, though - I found the links for backer on the Kickstarter! :)

Well nevertheless, you could write a review on the comment page -Just saying. I'm backer myself, and the content of the books looks amazing except there's some problems when reading with application other than Adobe reader. Cyan colored main content layout goes from yellow, pink to dark brownish hue some times. I hope they'd fix that. It hinders reading.

Good idea, I may write up a review in the comments in the near future. I use Foxit Reader for PDFs and have not experienced the issues to which you're referring.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
