Light City #3 - The Amazon

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $0.00

The battle continues in Light City!

We try to be timely here in the city, so this was a class that just had to come along!  Add it to your superheroic gaming using the excellent Swords & Wizardry Light ruleset, or use it in fantasy games with little fuss...it's pretty simple, but should also be pretty familiar.  We know you may not visit Light City for all of your four-color roleplaying, but we do hope you'll stop by now and then!

Hi Jonathan,

The Amazon as presented is a good, solid entry but it's a shame you have to stick to public domain heroes. Venus, Big Bang Comics' Wonder Woman pastiche, could have added the following:

Level 4, Phalanx: By holding her armored bracelets before her face and concentrating, the Amazon creates an AC 2[17] force-field that will shield three human-sized beings for two rounds. This could be substituted for the Gift of the Ancients.

Level 7, Siren Song of Life: The Amazon sings a song of four rounds duration. At the end of the four rounds all listeners have been healed of 2d6 damage OR had all non-magical diseases and poisons neutralized.

Of course, as GM my tweaking is law, but do you think this would unbalance the game?

Hi Royce! Balance is kind of overrated anyway, isn't it? Those look good to me. (I guess as long as you don't have someone repeatedly Phalanxing and keeping any real action from taking place...!)

I love what they do at Big Bang Comics, by the way!

Hi Jonathan,

Actually, balance means a lot to me. Thank the Lord for the OSR movement; I stayed out of gaming a long time because it seemed everyone was trying to run a god at 1st level. You know the type:

If you consider Excalibur a decent back-up weapon...

If what you call "Improved Continual Light" other people call "Sunrise"...

If you can skydive butt-naked from outer space and walk away from the landing...

If the gods ask YOU what's going to happen today...

If you consider your dad multi-classed because he works two different jobs to keep you in gaming materials...

You might be a munchkin.

Phalanx was originally meant to give the Amazon and two teammates or civilians time to rally their thoughts or powers or to get behind physical cover as needed. If it were used in the manner you suggested I should think it would call down divine punishment for acting in an un-Amazon-like...See more

Ha! I see what you mean on balance. You nailed it, though, with your thought on divine punishment...I think there's very little a good GM can't work around with the appropriate handicaps.

With that said, I definitely strive for some balance in these classes. I was careful with the Elemental's flight, for example, because I know that flying is typically considered VERY powerful in fantasy RPGs, and I want to keep in the SWL vein. In practice, though, if it gets out of hand, a ceiling of deadly lasers 10 feet off the ground isn't too hard to throw into an adventure...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
