GM's Maps #44: Art Gallery

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

The art gallery presented here is a medium to large gallery suitable as either a public or privately owned establishment and for any historical period from the late 18th century to the modern day. Architecturally it is most likely to have been constructed in the 19thcentury and has been loosely based on several from that period, from both the USA and Europe. Galleries of that period are still commonly used for their original purpose to this day in cities all across the developed and deeloping world.

Using an Art Gallery in Your Scenarios and Campaigns

Art galleries can be places for PCs to meet NPCs, perhaps even experts who have the specialist kind of knowledge the PCs need.

In addition to that though there are a range of ways to use the art gallery in your games.

Mystery:- There are a range of mysteries that can be based in the art gallery. From a murder to an apparently impossible theft. Just how did the thieves get the valuable painting out of the gallery without tripping any of the alarms, and through several locked doors?

Haunting:- Something unnatural stalks the art gallery. Night watchmen report strange lights or noises, like whispering, although no one can ever make out what is being said. People often report the feeling of being watched or even followed, and objects sometimes seem to have been moved when no one was watching. What phantom haunts the Art Gallery? Or is it one of the exhibits that has attracted the wraith to this place and if so, which one?

Magical or Occult Artefacts:- One of the exhibits in the gallery is an occult item of considerable importance to certain practitioners of the arcane arts. Perhaps it is cursed, and the curse is affecting the gallery and those who frequent it, or perhaps some occult brotherhood simply seeks to gain control of the item. It may even be the PCs who seek to use its power. However, acquiring the item is only half of the problem, controlling it proves to bring its own difficulties.

Running Battle:- An art gallery can make a memorable and fun place to stage an action sequence, especially if it is a running (rather than a pitched or stationary) battle. Combatants rampaging through the gallery with exhibits being used as weapons or becoming damaged in the crossfire. This can be especially fun if one side is trying their best to protect the art from harm. With the right preparation and an imaginative and descriptive GM a battle in an art gallery is the sort of thing your players might well be talking about for months or even years afterwards.

Art Theft;- One obvious plot idea for the gallery is an art theft. The PCs may either be the ones tasked with planning and executing a flawless robbery or they may be trying to stop it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
