Ironwood Gorge

ADD TO WISHLIST >

"Orcs have returned to the once quiet border province of Blackmarch.  The Bleak Tower and its meager garrison are all that stand against the tide.  Their only hope lies in a ragtag band of adventurers willing to venture into the perilous maw of Ironwood Gorge..."

Ironwood Gorge is a fantasy role-playing adventure for 4-8 characters of levels 2-5, designed for older editions of the world's most popular fantasy role-playing game and its clones such as Labyrinth Lord and OSRIC.  The material is also easily adaptable to any other class and level based fantasy role-playing game.  Ironwood Gorge serves as part two in the Blackmarch sequence of adventures, but is built to function just as well as a one-off adventure, a drop-in-a-hex location for sandbox games, or as a kick start to a new campaign.

The module includes keyed maps detailing both the Bleak Tower: a living, breathing refuge for adventurers; and Ironwood Gorge: a cave complex with over 100 keyed areas of traps, monsters and mayhem. The module is illustrated throughout with original artwork and includes appendices detailing new monsters, magic items, and spells.  Whether you are looking for an out-sized adventure to usher the hardiest characters to the intermediate levels, or a fully-realized location to plunder for maps and ideas, Ironwood Gorge is a treasure from the old-school of gaming...

I very much enjoy The Sanctuary Ruin and The Ironwood Gorge, and am looking forward to the third. (And someone else already pointed out the small goof on rooms 48 and 49. I think there's one other like that, but I don't have it to hand right now.)

One tiny suggestion when you revamp -- since they are currently available only in PDF, I'd love it if you made the numbers on the maps links to the room descriptions in the keys, so that one doesn't have to page through the document. (That or make the bookmarks more comprehensive.)

Fortunately Ironwood Gorge was released without locks, so I was able to add that to my own version, but others might find that useful.

Annoying addendum — the Warlord’s Horde should be a Warlord’s Hoard. While the Warlord certainly has a horde, the items described are a hoard.

I came to ask the same question if you have released new materials. I played the 1st scenario and currently playing Ironwood Gorge. The quality of your work is among the best. Good luck to find the time to work on your updated modules and part 3!

Yes, I am currently working on a significant overhaul of the 3 available modules, as well as Blackmarch Part 3: The Bleak Tower, but realistically am still likely at least year away from publishing them.

Is it just me or do areas 48 & 49 not have entries on the upper levels of the caverns?

Thanks for your feedback; looks like that is a mistake in the current version. I will be sure to correct it in the subsequent edition - though that will not be complete for a while. Consider them both empty chambers in the meantime. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. -Eric

Hi there Eric! Any chance we'll ever see module 3, The Bleak Tower? I know it's been 10 years...cheers.

Yes. Progressing at a [flail] snail's pace due to other commitments, but I have been working hard on module 3 as well as significantly revamping modules 1 & 2. Optimistically, it may take another year or so, but I am steadily chipping away.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
