The Escalated Barbarian

Recommended. Especially for less cost than a pint of cheap lager, this is a good buy.

Pros:

  • For £2.27, you get a lot of good material.
  • The Talents and magic items and optional rules mostly look like stuff you'd actially want to use.

Cons:

  • Leftover editing/proofreading marks and comments.
  • Lots of page count dedicated to Backgrounds and Uniques, some of which are a bit pointless.

DISCLAIMER: I haven't playtested anything in this book, but it all looks about right at first glance. There isn't much in there and it's a bit scruffy, but what is there mostly looks like stuff I'd want to have a go at (especially the Furies) as a player.

I'll likely pick up the other books in the series off the back of this one and see how they measure up.

One of my players made the observation "We're in a dungeon built by the Bluth Company."

It's a fairly unique spin on a traditional dungeon crawl, and a great bargain for the price.

There are some nice ideas in there, but overall it seems a bit unfinished to me. Some talents are nice to have and the furies area a pretty cool idea. The quick NPCs are almost too detailed for me, but anyone who likes playing their NPCs with PC stats may be happy.

The interior layout can't keep up with the cover, it's just basic text with no pictures at all. There are even comments (from proofreading?) left in the final file. The points of the comments haven't even been corrected. For example one comment points out that "second wind" is "still an old name" but the error is still in there.

Great production value and plenty of content for your 4th-5th level group. Great variety of enemy encounters to keep your combat-oriented players happy while even the most meandering parties will find plenty of interesting places explore. Introductory sections has lots of resources to help Game Masters hook their players and integrate the adventure easily into the unique aspects of the 13th age system. Great value for the price.
