I have been waiting for this book since it was announced, and it does not disappoint! In less than two hundred pages, the writing team has packed in four mindblowing riffs on the Exalted universe (I'm especially fond of Gunstar Autochthonia and Burn Legend), one stripped-down set of game rules (Burn Legend), and enough inspiration to fuel my own Exalted ideas -- AU or canon -- for what feels like forever.

And then there are the rules offered. Drive Charms! Firearms Charms! A tweak to Sidereal astrology! But most wonderously of all, a complete revamp of Abyssal Resonance that is /significantly/ less crippling and actually allows for Abyssal themes other than Redemption Killfield and Slaughter Em All. This is a beautiful thing and I can't wait to lift it wholesale for my vanilla Exalted game.

The writing itself is consider and evocative also; no dry as dust text here, oh no.

Go! Buy! Enjoy! :D

For people who already love the game, this is a chance to re-use everything you already know and enjoy in weird and wonderful new ways dreamed up to be fascinating new permutations of the games ideas, themes and origins. For people who have only dabbled before or who haven't gotten into the wonderful and sprawling main setting, these are four new worlds you can start afresh in and build out from to create your own amazing games with. There are new Charms, Artifacts and modern era or sci-fi tech as well as new or tweaked rules sub-sytems.

The inspirations here run the gamut from Kill-Bill style Martial Arts homages, to Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Dune and even the X-Files, Fringe or Shadowrun. If this doesn't help you to build your own perfect Exalted Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Action Thriller game I don't know what would.

How much do you need an alternate settings book for a game with a setting that's already fantastic? More than you think. Four completely bent takes on the time before (or is it after?) the World of Darkness give birth to ideas, characters, toys, locations, and of course, Charms, that can add to any Exalted experience. Even if one particular tool doesn't work for you (I'm looking at you, Burn Legend Techniques), there are a half-dozen others that will. Discover Creation again for the first time.

So, I've bought this book. I'm gonna be honest and say that I've been waiting for this book to come out for quite a while now. I can say honestly that it's been worth the wait.

The concept of having alternate settings is pretty much an old one for most games in RPGs, sure, but the ones included into this books not only manage to be interesting, but as well be the springboard for many others. They also manage to remain distinct from one another, as well as the base setting of Creation.

Gunstar, the first Shard, impressed me by the way not just in the way it was a classical 'what if' scenario of the Exalted losing the Primordial War. It also impressed me on how it manages to accomplish something that I've never found to be done in any of the other Exalted splats -- work the various Exalted type together into a whole, not just some sort of multiple smaller isolated ecosystems that looks at each other warringly, barely works together and is often self-contradictory. It shows an understanding of mixed circle, how they could work in the same group toward a similar goal.

Heaven's Reach is the second one, I thought was a touch similar at first to Gunstar. It's not. Where Gunstar is a a desperate struggle, Heaven's Reach is kung-fu-wuxia space opera just waiting to happen. Rules about science fiction things, space exploration with the added Exalted flavour really brings it home well. It's almost old Creation, scaled to a wider scale of a galaxy.

Burn Legends is also quite exceptional as it introduce a whole new combat system, a system that I find quite easy to learn, fun to play and also do not take half of a century to resolve in an online format. The base setting is a strong callback to games like Street Fighters, Mortal Kombat or Tekken -- and as such, can be largely ignored if you really don't like it. It's also apparently built to have new styles and powers converted from the basic Exalted game into it, which is a good thing as there is sadly far too few martial arts style to chose from. DM intervention might be needed, but when does it not? It's a simple, rock-paper-scissor like combat system and it's fast paced. Precisely what Exalted needed for a long time.

Modern Creation is the last featured Shard, which is also quite excellently written. If you were one of those people that looked at Exalted, went 'Ehhhhhn, looks cool, but that greco-roman wuxia fantasy thing really don't drag me in', then give /this/ a shot if you'd have rather a more comparable setting. Creation thrown into a more current-years level of society brings a lot of memories of games like FF7 or 8's own worlds. Resonance of Fate is also a good example of vibe that it gives. Familiar landmarks, technologies -- a wholly different world.

The last chapter is where most of the crunch of the book is located at. New charms, new rules for the Drive and Firearm skills -- with attached charms for all Exalted types. At first glance it looks to be balanced with itself, Firearms managing to be interesting while not overpowered -- or underpowered.

All in all, this is an excellent book, I'm waiting eagerly for my printed version. This bring some great fresh air in Exalted.

So what we have here is a lot of really cool setting ideas against the backdrop of Exalted. That is itself is pretty sweet; Exalted is full of deeply thoughtful material that mixes philosophy and mythology with an anime feel (even if it suffers from shaky mechanics), and any well-written expansion of that material is appreciated.

Shards is more than that, though.

The setting of Exalted is beautiful and meaningful, but also huge and intimidating. There are ELEVEN massive setting books for Creation and the outlying territories, filled with characters and factions that bounce off of each other. It's great, but also tough to get into.

Shards offers an easy access point; alternate playspaces that still feel full but that are FAR less tough to step into for a newbie. Hell, it has an entire alternate (if combat-heavy) game system in just this book that's pretty sweet for pick-up-and-play.

Exalted is an anime style game, but there's a lot of types of anime out there. The main game provides for several, but fans of space operas and modern-day superpowers may have felt left out.

Shards takes care of them and opens the game to the general anime loving populace.

Exalted's system is a great idea, with mechanics that feel like they reflect the world it creates, but it's clunky. A lot of it is broken and it's tough to learn and homebrew for without borking the setting and themes.

Shards contains alternate systems that make a few of those busted-but-still-cool ideas easier to use in ANY setting and more balanced, period.

Most importantly, Shards is a fun read. It crams tons of flavor and setting into small spaces, the crunch sections are meaningful to the worlds it weaves, and it shows that the current Exalted team has some chops and some ambition. It shows what the future of this game might look like: ambitious, balanced and able to learn from where its been while still doing something new and worthwhile. If you've never played this game, good news: Shards is all you need to get started, and with the core book (and the mechanics updates in the free-to-download "Scroll of Errata") all you need to run a hell of a campaign. It's an entry point, and that's something Exalted hasn't had in a while. I encourage any gamer to give it a go.

Shards is absolutely excellent. WoD: Mirrors was one of my favorite WoD supplements, so when I heard there was an upcoming version for Exalted, I was really excited. Shards lives up to the hype, and is worth every penny. All four settings presented are incredible, but I particularly love The Modern Age. Seeing how Exalted functions in a world so similar to our own was very interesting, and I'm a sucker for fantasy settings with real-world names.

Gunstar Autocthonia was my second favorite, if only for the sheer, undiluted awesome of the Empyreal Chaos charms, and the idea of the other Exalted living in Autocthonia, which I personally find more interesting that canon Creation.

Heaven's Reach, a.k.a Exalted: IN SPAAAAAAACE, is also really cool. It's interesting to see a High Fantasy setting converted into pure Sci-Fi, and to see Exalted with nothing supernatural was an unexpected breath of fresh air.

Burn Legend is the shard that appeals to me the least, but it is in no way bad. Seeing the Exalted on modern earth, in a setting that is so different from the canon setting was quite nice, since that was the whole point of Shards. The style looks to be fun, but I see it as more of a party game or something, rather than a real RPG. It feels more like a mini-game, rather than a complete setting.

All in all though, Shards is awesome, and is a must-have for every Exalted Fan.

Bought this to reward myself. Definitely worth the money.

First shard - Empereal Chaos charms (at least, the first half anyway) with hints of more. Glimpses/intimations of pre-primordial war creation. Autochthon as a star destroyer/colony ship.

Second shard - Hey all you Lunar fans - here's one where lunars are front and center all over the place. Techno-exalted, and another, rather fun take on yozis.

Third shard - burn legend - not my cup of tea, though some of the fluff was pretty nice

Fourth shard - modern exalted - probably my fave - if only for the complete flip in expectations. If vanilla exalted =1, and gunstar = -1, call this -0.25, but in a very good way.

Here's what Shards of the Exalted Dream gets you:

GUNSTAR AUTOCHTHONIA: The Exalted fought the Primordials for rulership of the world. The Exalted lost. They retreated to the world-body of Autochthon and fled the Spiral of Creation, the great cosmos crafted by the Primordials. The supremacy of Solar medicine and artifice has made his disease manageable and Lunar hunting parties brutally massacre gremlins and Apostates alike. The Sidereal Exalted use the stolen Loom of Fate to maintain the Grand Design of Autochthon and coordinate the squadrons of Dragon-Blooded Voidfighter pilots. Throughout the Octet, the Alchemical Exalted maintain the peace and enforce the law and order of the Solar Deliberative... or plot revolution against its tyranny. Exalts and mortals alike are caught up in the political machinations and intrigues of the Deliberative.

Meanwhile, the Daystar hunts Autochthonia without rest, followed by the swarms of Kimbery, Dragon-Blooded Akuma bred from the Terrestrials who could not flee Creation and the shintai forms of the Infernal Exalted crafted by the Primordials thanks to the knowledge they gleamed from the Sun's mind after he abandoned his Chosen. The Void holds unknown dangers that threaten Autochthonia as it travels through space and mines entire planets bare. Soulsteel Voidfighters piloted by the Abyssal Exalted fly through space, but no one knows their purpose.

The exile of Autochthon and the Exalted Host nears its end. The Exalted have spent millennia crafting the Great Maker's souls and welding armour and Essence weapon to the immense outer shell of his body in order to craft the Gunstar. Once the work is complete, they will return to Creation with the ultimate war engine.

Gunstar Autochthonia is a story of high-power science-fiction. Character creation is generous with Backgrounds and First Age character creation rules are optional for Storytellers who want to use them. Players can play diplomats, soldiers, mad scientists, generals, Gundam pilots or any other role imaginable regardless of which Exaltation they have (if they have one at all). The setting assumes that the Infernal Exalted are antagonists, but they can be played as protagonists if they decide to betray their Primordial masters or if the Storyteller decides to flesh out the Primordials' side of the setting. The charms of the Empyreal Chaos serve as the chapter's capstone.

HEAVEN'S REACH: While Gunstar Autochthonia delivers Battlestar Galactica and Gundam, Heaven's Reach provides the Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Banner of the Stars and Mass Effect brand of science-fiction. Centuries ago, nanotechnology became picotechnology and then femtotechnology. Humans used this technology to manipulate Essence motes and create the Exalted. The Lunars came first, then the Dragon-Blooded elite soldiers, followed by the Sidereal "chaos computing terminals" and the Solars, humans chosen as companions for the stellar intelligences, Stellar Intelligences, immense constructs with advanced AIs who were designed to maintain the stellar empire of humanity... until they rebelled. Their destruction ravaged the galaxy, leaving behind the system-spanning black holes called Tomb-Stars. Eventually, the Stellar Intelligences were defeated. Their programs were diminished and they were banished beyond known space. The Solars ruled for a time, but their rule became increasingly unstable and threatened the future of the Central Empire. The Lunars, Sidereals and Dragon-Blooded decided to overthrow the Solars. Some willingly went into Exile, others had to be killed. With the Solars replaced, the Central Empire achieved some semblance of peace and stability.

Or maybe that's just what the semi-tyranny of His Divine Lunar Presence wants people to think.

Lunars rule the Central Empire with the help of the Dragon-Blooded trade clans. Meanwhile, the Lunars of the Long War faction reject the decadence of their Imperial cousins and build their forces in the frontier world so that they can hunt down the Stellar Intelligences and end them permanently. The Sidereals maintain the Grand Celestial Mountain, a computer complex that is networked with thousands of manses across the known worlds and Ronin Sidereals who reject the boredom of the Grand Celestial Mountain keep watch over areas that aren't connected to the network. These Sidereals are actually respected by the information spirits of the Mountain and I would say that Heaven's Reach does a better job of setting the tone for a Sidereal game than Manual of Exalted Power: Sidereal does. The Solars are reappearing with greater frequency in the frontier world beyond the Central Empire's reach and so are the Abyssals, Solars corrupted by the Tomb-Stars. The Deathlords are briefly present as Death Avatars, but they are only manifestations of the Tomb-Stars' will. They no longer hold the Abyssals in leash, something which benefits Abyssals greatly. The Infernal Exalted were cut because of space limitations, but they're fairly easy to include. The Yozis are still out there and obtaining their power is just a question of finding them. I recommend Event Horizon (1997) and the Silver Surfer to anyone looking for inspiration.

Heaven's Reach describes a few alien species and planets, but most of the work is up to the Storyteller. Heaven's Reach can have thousands of species scattered across millions of planets or it can be a human-only game that takes place in a single system or planet. It all depends on what the Storyteller and the players want. It also includes a few mundane and artifact star ships, while the book's Appendix provides general rules for dreadnoughts and other massive vehicles. Exalts are capped at Essence 5, which greatly increases the threat of the Stellar Intelligences and weapons of mass destruction and removes the problem of super-powered Elders. Although Heaven's Reach and Gunstar Autochthonia are meant to be two different settings, it shouldn't be hard to adapt pieces of one to the other.

BURN LEGEND: The setting of fighting games and anime. Exaltation is the reward given to those who walk the path of martial arts and it's attainable by anyone who knows how to make a fist. The basic setting is modern Earth, but it's easily adaptable to any historical or fictional context. Character creation focuses on combat and everything else is handled by Backgrounds: Roll Contacts if you want to gather information and roll Magic if you want to bind an angry spirit. Combat is based on Rock-Paper-Scissors. There are several categories of Techniques and nearly all Techniques trump Techniques of a specific category automatically. If victory isn't automatic, the two fighters roll the ensuing Clash. Once victory is determined, damage is rolled and applied. There's a little more to it than that, but the basic principle is to guess the category of the opponent's next Technique and to choose the right Technique to counter it. The traditional system transparency is done away with.

The book includes techniques for the demonic Akuma, the Infernal Yamajin, the Dragon-Blooded Ryuujin, the Lunar Okami, the Abyssal Shinigami and the Solar Mugen. Players who would rather play mortal fighters have a selection of mundane martial art styles to choose from. Exaltations provide a wide range of benefits that create different play styles in addition to their supernatural techniques. For example, the Mugen and Akuma can purchase certain techniques at a reduced experience cost if they know a related mundane style. Burn Legend is a solid setting for people who want to play a game that feels like Exalted without having to deal with the complex and oft-troublesome mechanics. It's also useful for people who want to play anything from Mortal Kombat to Avatar: The Last Airbender (the Ryuujin are practically designed for this purpose).

THE MODERN AGE: The Modern Age is Creation with 21st century technology. Like Heaven's Reach, Exalts are capped at Essence 5, so all those nuclear missile silos are actually a cause for concern. Lunars have stalked the world for years, but Dragon-Blooded super-soldiers are a recent addition attributed to genetic engineering. Gods are still around, but they're rare and illegal unless they're attached to some religious organization as a guardian angel.

The Modern Age is a difficult setting to review because the whole thing is just a cover for a conspiracy. I could describe the default conspiracy suggested by the chapter, but I know some people won't like it and I don't want to give the wrong impression, so I'm just going to quote the book: "What's important in this shard isn't that the [REDACTED] rule, but that the truth is hidden." Storytellers are encouraged to replace the default suggestion with anything they find more interesting.

I particularly like the way each Exaltation's place within the shard is described. Each type of Exalt gets a few paragraphs to describe its role in the setting, but they also get a paragraph that describes their place in the narrative. For example, Sidereals are suited for police procedurals, spy dramas and psychological thrillers, among a few other things. These paragraphs really set the tone of the setting and provide excellent suggestions for both Storytellers and players who want to better understand what the Exalted actually do in the Modern Age shard.

THE APPENDIX: This is where most of the rules are. These include the Drive and Firearms Abilities used in Heaven's Reach and Modern Age. Characters of the appropriate Caste can replace one of their Caste Abilities with Drive or Firearms, so no one gets 6 Caste Abilities. It also includes rules for hacking, which is covered by Lore, as well as modifications to the Sail Ability that adapt it to space flight, aviation or nautical sailing as appropriate to the setting and character. Space flight is the default in Heaven's Reach, but characters can take an appropriate specialization to fly planes or sail boats as well. it also includes simplified rules for Sidereal Astrology in settings without the Loom of Fate as well as alternate Resonance rules for settings without the Neverborn. These can be adapted to the default Exalted setting. It also includes rules for chases. These can be adapted to car chases, flight or foot races.

The Appendix also has statistics for guns, blasters, cannons, modern armor, motorcycles, cars and planes, both mundane and Artifacts. It also includes rough guidelines for artillery bombardments.

The book ends with Drive, Firearms and hacking charms. Being Ability-based, Solars, Abyssals, Sidereals and Dragon-Blooded get the most charms while Lunars, Alchemicals and Infernals get the least. Sidereals also get new Colleges for the Drive and Firearms abilities.

Overall, I strongly recommend this book for Exalted fans. Some of the mechanics can easily be ported to the default setting and it's a great inspiration. Lunars, Sidereals and Abyssals benefit greatly from their reinterpretations and many of the NPCs mentioned throughout the book can be adapted to the main setting.

And if nothing else, it's a good read.

This book has rekindled my waning passion for Exalted. I've always loved the game, but I felt as though I'd played out most of the stories I wanted to play within the setting, and despite the vast tracts of empty land in Creation, the fact that most of the major power centers and their history came pre-defined was cramping my ability to fit new and interesting surprises for my players into the setting.

This book has changed all that. It's four new settings (and a pile of delicious crunch!), and I want to play in all of them. Any one of them could keep me gaming happily for years.

Amazing book, the developers have knocked one clear out of the park once again. This book truly has something for just about everyone, my only complaint is that reading this book has left me hungering for more from each of the shards within. Nonetheless, the amount of detail they managed to place within the worlds with an average of 40 pages each is remarkable.

The material in this book takes Exalted and expands it, twists it, reforges it, and makes it anew. It is boh what I had expected from reading about it and so much more than I had ever thought was in the works. Each shard in the book has different strengths and weakness, but all together there is definitely something that will have a person squee in delight. I recommend it, I think its a great book and that anybody who can get it should get it.

After 2 years of a drought on Exalted products, with only Compass of Celestial Directions: Autocthonia and the recently released Masters of Jade, both very low on new mechanical aspects, Shards of Exalted Dreams finally gives a much needed injection of new mechanical aspects, and far more campaign ideas than both books combined. It was also more engaging to read, especially the first chapter. The new charms are well done, though the chapter Burn Legend is a near rewrite, and requires a lot more in analysis than I've had time to, but it's simple premise and approach appears to make it a great way to slide people into Exalted, rather than deal with the entire charm cascades of the various Exalts. This is a must-buy book, and hopefully a sign of improvement for the Exalted line.

This has been long awaited, but it was WORTH IT.

First the bad (what little there is) - not a very big fan of the Space Opera. But then again, I wasn't sure I wanted to see it at all, and I'm glad that they made it a lot better than I expected. I just don't feel like I'll be running or joining a Space Opera game enthusiastically. Nothing against the setting or the writers, who did an amazing job; I'm just not really feeling space opera at the moment (then again, I really wasn't "feeling" Exalted before Infernals, so who knows if/when that may change?) Also, there's a bit of flavor about Meruvia in the Modern Age that really just irks me.

Okay, that's the bad. So, why do I give it five stars if there was bad?

Because the rest was just. That. Good.

GA (Still not going to say it; it's a big, BIG spoiler) was just brilliant. When Shards came out, I was at lunch at work, and so only had time to peruse a bit. Luckily, this was that bit. The new Charms introduced blew me away, I do not mind saying. And the setting and flavor were just fantastic. (I feel like I'm using all the Doctor's catchphrases... the whole thing deserves a "Geronimo!" going in!) I'm going to have to reread that a whole number of times.

Then there's Modern. Like I said, a bit of the religious fluff for Meruvia irked me (I'll let you guess which). That seemed a bit too cliche, especially given the secrets. However, how the worked everything together (and I mean everything) really was brilliant, and I was excited for much of the rest of the material (especially Chejop's role in things... a very nice twist).

But Burn Legend... my God, Burn Legend.

First off, if you have any Kindred of the East Books laying around, dust them off. Especially 1000 Hells...

Burn Legend intrigued me going in. A different system, particularly in a supplement as opposed to a side book (and a large chunk of that supplement, as opposed to the appendix nature of Creation Ruling Mandate from MoJ or the Storyteller's Companion's Mandate of Heaven rules) is always a big risk. And yet, it worked. No, scratch that - it exceeded expectations. It's simple, easy to grasp, and just plain cool.

More important to me, though, is the fluff. As a fan of KotE, I was very surprised (in the best way possible) by what I was reading for parts of the fluff (again, I'll let you guess which splat's fluff). And the fluff for the other splats was just as good, creating a nice, cohesive universe, that still can be modified to fit personal needs (I remember the forums discussing using the Ryujin to model the Avatar the Last Airbender universe, and one developer mentioning having drawn up Korra's stats already). It alone would have been worth at least half the purchase price.

Finally, there's the Appendix, where most of the main game crunch is. Guns. Cars. Computers. All there (Plus an awesome new Resonance system for Abyssals to replace what they have now. They need to ship this back in time and put it in the book in place of the old Dark Curse).

So... yeah. Are you an Exalted fan? Then buy this book. You WILL find something you can use, be it in the fluff or the crunch (and even if you're playing "Vanilla" Exalted, that charmset in GA is worth a look...)
