Kagegami High

Selected Option:

Kagegami High is a private girls-only school on a small island off the coast of Tokyo. It is a place for learning, menacing government agencies, strange religious practices from the dawn of Japanese history, and moral and physical development, all in a secluded location, free from wicked outside influences. It’s supposed to be a very good, very elite school. You remember hearing that somewhere, though you’re not sure where. You got in, though you’re not sure when you applied, how you passed the entrance exam, how your family is paying for it, or how exactly you got here. There are a lot of things you’re not sure about, but is that really so different from before?

What you have before you is a comedic role-playing game where you take on the role of schoolgirls at a strange, surreal high school where every conspiracy, every urban legend, is true, though not necessarily in the way you'd expect. The simple rules and copious random tables bring Kagegami High and the island of Kageshima to life, letting you have countless strange, surreal, and hilarious adventures there.

To play you will need some friends, pencils and paper, and six-sided dice (with one die of a different color to be the Weird Die).

Good description. I wanted to buy it even before I saw Ewen's name attached. More publishers should write descriptions like this.

This game isn't focused on combat, with the stress stat being the equivalent of the HP stat in a dungeon crawler. However, there are tables for "weird events" such as haunted books flying off the shelf like projectiles at your friends. If you want real dungeon crawling action, I'd have the characters discover a secret basement under the school which then switches over into a combat-oriented system of your choice. Something like the Buffy RPG or Savage World's ETU setting might be more what you're looking for, though. I'd say that the main focus of this game is to emulate the feel of an animated cartoon or anime, with an open world approach.

I have ran and played in a ton of one shots using this system and it is a ton of fun. What is also a ton of fun is mining it for content to use in my ongoing TTRPG campaign to add some absurdity and humor when I need to lighten the mood. (Also for naming cults because I am really bad at that).

I'm writing this as a review here because I just bought the game in hardcopy today but DriveThru only lets me rate it if I bought the PDF.

This game is nuts and I am loving it. It should fit perfectly with the zany antics my gaming group tends to gravitate towards. The charts alone are nuts (if you have ever read it, think the charts in the Human Occupied Landfill supplement, "Butter Wholesomeness" but with less emphasis on "edgy" 90s grossout humour).

If you are looking for a truly ridiculous game that is primarily made up on the fly by rolling on numerous different charts for every applicable situation, this is the game for you. It is not something that you or your group will likely take overly seriously...and that's OK! Not every game is going to go into deep politics, heavy emotions, or life and death combat. The rules are very loose and largely exist just to resolve conflicts and move the plot along. If a player wants to do something, its up to them...See more

Magic and witchcraft, androids, demons and angels, elder gods, forbidden technology, mental powers... and not a word on how to run any of it. A world full of dangers, and nothing but "stress" to track any of the effects. Is there another, earlier book that covers more of these sorts of things, or is this game just that entirely and intensely "rules light"?

It's really interesting as a source book and a highly entertaining read-through, but seems to imply a lot that's never detailed.

Kagegami High runs on a variant of the rules of Maid RPG, which also has pretty light rules, so that although you can give them more detail, you can handle virtually any NPC using only two numbers (Attribute rank and Stress Limit) and some flavor text.

Take for example the Special Quality "Supernatural Being - Witch" -- the character actually has some witchcraft, some form of spellcasting, right?

So is that just entirely freeform and whatever the group agrees is appropriate?

Exactly, though you can use the "Invoking a Trait" mechanic with that, similar to invoking an aspect in Fate.

Fate isn't for everyone, but if you want to check it out, Evil Hat has Fate Core and Fate Accelerated available as Pay What You Want PDFs, and they've done quite a few interesting settings with the system.

Is "venomous foot spurs" a euphemism for what I think it is?

If you believe it to be referring to how boys have venomous foot spurs similar to the platypus, then yes.

Kagegami has some new stuff I've been experimenting with. The stats are on a slightly different scale (2d6/2 instead of 2d6/3) and it uses a die pool mechanic, so you'd have to pick one die system or the other to use for your game (and roughly reduce NPCs' stats by 1), but otherwise the game's content is mostly tables with word content, which shouldn't present any problems for using with other M.A.I.D. engine games.

Okay, it's fixed now. And if you don't mind reading around the "Sample file" thing you can try rolling up a character!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
