Kicked out of home at the cruelly young age of 60, you're left to fend for yourself in the wilds surrounding Bilgeton. You are the Bastard Elf: embark on an epic quest in search of your human father and his fabled couch upon which you might crash, or blow that off as soon as something better comes along. Can you survive in this strange and vicious fantasy realm?

The Sword of the Bastard Elf is an epic single player gamebook adventure of ludicrous size and scope - more than 300,000 words long, split into 1825 sections, it offers an obscene number of ways to play and a huge amount of replayability. All this comes with a cost - the printed book is absolutely huge and incredibly heavy, certainly not something you'd want to lug around with you all day.

Enter The Sword of the Bastard Elf - Travel Edtion. While still obscenely long at 816 pages, it's been re-formated to a more sane size which could conceivably fit in your luggage or go on your lap in the train. It's been painstakingly redesigned to fit in the half-letter size format (8.5*5.5") without sacrificing many of the things that made the original special : all the gameplay and words are still here, along with nearly all the illustrations, but much of the white space has been stripped out and the fluff has been excised to make room. But as long as you weren't planning to dungeon master the RPG on the train it won't make a lot of difference to you. Also it's a bit cheaper.

You can get a couple of things to help you in playing this book : a deck of item cards (regular cards or a print & play/digital reference version) or a special pre-printed card book with a lot more information about the items you'll pick up and the world you're stumbling around in when you play this game.  A bit later on there'll be a Bestiary with even more info, hints and tips and useless jokes. But you don't need any of that stuff to jump in - all you need is a couple of dice and your two rock-hard fists!

Warning: This is not for little kids! While there's nothing overtly sexual or extremely horrible going on here there are some very weird characters, something called a phalloknight, lots of codpieces, an unpleasant dragon and some violent situations which could put anything younger than a teenager off gamebooks forever. Also they won't get the really good jokes.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PDF VERSION OF THIS IS IDENTICAL TO THE REGULAR EDITION OF THE BASTARD ELF!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
