SUPPORTING DEM

Ultramodern5 is presented as an SRD under the OGL to both support 5th Edition and to encourage more alternative games using the system.  We are hoping that this SRD will be used in the spirit it is offered.

All new rules presented in this file are considered open content.  As there is no artwork, characters, or maps included in this edition, they are not open content.  This file is only offered for the purposes of reference, and as such does not include a contents page, an index, artwork, maps, adventures, or setting ideas.

Ultramodern5-SRD/OGL is offered as a "Pay What You Want" if fans wish to support Dias Ex Machina in producing original content.  Alternately, you could purchase the official Ultramodern5 book, which does include everything removed from this SRD.

Ultramodern5 is the follow-up of the popular Ultramodern4

The mission of U5 is to present 5th EDITION rules for use in non-fantasy settings. These include pre-modern settings, contemporary settings, and those that are far flung fantastic and futuristic.  U5 presents modern and science fiction rules in a game usually reserved for fantasy. There is no established setting in U5.

It presents classes, gear, and scenarios that can be inserted into any campaign.

You may explore the rules in whatever context you wish. Rules are generalized, encouraging homebrew settings and the rebranding of elements.

Create a pure science fiction setting, or insert these rules into your own fantasy world to offer a unique spin.

THIS SOURCEBOOK INCLUDES:

A revised “ladder” system, offering more adjustability with character creation. Modify your class with one of seven ladders.

Revamped rules around being human.

A new lifepath system incorporating backgrounds (with eleven new ones) into an adjustable life history where characters can select every aspect of their character’s history, from family and friends to past love affairs.

Ten new classes including the infiltrator, medic, sniper, and techie.

Twenty-four archetypes

All new weapons including traditional firearms, rocket launchers, and laser rifles

New armor including powered combat suits.

Purchase and modify vehicles

Over forty new monsters including giant robots.

I picked up the Fantasy Grounds module for Ultramodern Redux and having the SRD available for reading is handy - thank you! I'll soon spring for the full ruleset - but you might consider packaging this with the FG product. FGU comes with a DOCS folder that is criminally under-used and this is exactly the sort of thing that a DM would love to find.

I've run a mutants and masterminds campaign but struggled with the rule set. I find 5e an easy and fun system. The thing that keeps me with Mutants and Mastermind for my superhero game is the power and power creation in MM. I am wondering how flexible this Ultramodern could be to use power creation and options from MM system but the core of Ultramodern.

Equivalent in versatility? I like the 'if you can think of it, then you can make it' power options.

My game is in hiatus, partially because I had a tough time with MM, but Pandemic. I want to pick it back up and considering porting over from MM to potentially Ultramodern 5e: Apex

Well, Apex has 184 upgradable powers, so I'm hoping there's variety there. :)

Was looking through the Ultramodern 5e OGL for a Neurospasta game I'll be running in the future and noticed a few oddities. I'm assuming these questions apply to both versions of the ultramodern 5e book but since I don't own that one I can't confirm it.
1) There is no price for the Rockets used by the Rocket Launchers in the ammunition section and they aren't listed in the table (although they are given a weight of 2 pounds each)
2) both the Multi-Ped Vehicle Light and Heavy are listed as having 2 movement speeds (walking and wheeled) yet the table only lists 1 speed 20ft for both. I looked up the Ultramodern 4e OGL and noticed that in that book the light was faster than the heavy and running conversions it looks like in 5e the Light Multi-Ped Vehicle should have a movement of 30ft (walking) 50ft (wheels) and the Heavy Multi-Ped Vehicle should be 20ft (walking) 40ft (wheels). Or are both types meant to be now 20ft whether walking or wheeled now? (which contradicts the text entries for those vehicles)...See more

Some really good points.
1: Rocket Launchers are an assembly with one rocket, but the assembly is pretty much worthless--rockets cost the same amount. So a MK1 Rocket costs $250 and a Mk2 costs $1000.
2: The Light Multi-Ped has a movement of 30.
3: The lower cost Electro is correct.
4: Yes, the Nano-Healer can be "reloaded" with another expensive H cell.
5: Yes, the heavy mortar was supposed to have a greater range, 300/1200, but the real intent was supposed to load larger grenades, a rule we took out before printing.

That explains a few things. Hadn't realized the rocket assemblies were 'worthless' one-shot launchers, I was figuring they were reusable ones but that does explain things.
1) Speaking of the Battery Cell - H, it has two prices in the Ammunition table it is listed at a cost of $40 each but the gear table lists it as $100 are they separate batteries used for different items (the ammo listing is just for weapons and the gear for everything else but that makes little sense when the other two battery types match up.)
2) Do the Multi-Peds no longer have the second wheeled movement type mentioned in their descriptions, or is that movement type at the same speed as the walking speed? (And if so why have it since walking ignores terrain and wheels don't or does the walking have a fixed speed like mounts or PC/NPCs while wheeled movement mode is the one that can go up to 20x?)
3) Also, do weapons with the pincher property have any effect on robots (since they can be 'battery powered') Would such a weapon...See more

Product is good and I like the classes. I would double the damage die for all modern and future firearms before I would introduce them (and make autofire five dice due to Star Frontiers nostalgia), but otherwise its pretty good.

You mean a system reference document, right? Otherwise the product is a new legal licence. SRD and OGL are two very different things.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
