Arrghh Bottom Sound-Ships: Crews, Combat, and Trade

When you go to put a product out for the discerning types here on DriveThruRPG the folks in charge kindly advise you to condense your product- your complex, nuanced, years of work and effort ‘product’, into a 20 or 30 word description that tells the reader all they could possibly need to know, the interesting bits, the subtle features that add value, the unique and creative mechanics and that special something that entices, nay, seduces them into parting with their time and money to investigate your effort.  For the very first time I’ve managed to do that, here now is THE blurb:

Pirates, Norse Deities, magic, wanton elves, Cthulhu, and rum in the Southwest Pacific!

If that doesn’t do it…I mean, a fantasy RPG with actual rules for sailing ships that can allow you to run an encounter in less than 37 hours? Adventures starting at Rick’s in the thriving seaport of Tenaru on Guadalcanal? An actual game mechanic for the players that just have to hit on the elf serving wench? Zombies invading Savo Island and only YOU can stop them?  15 minutes to create a character? This is why you started playing RPG’s, come home and enjoy.

Of course since this is free it is not the complete game, just an introduction with the rules for sailing ships and a couple of scenarios, hopefully enough that combined with the blurb above you will be excitedly checking DriveThruRPG or our Facebook Page to make sure you are one of the first purchasers when the full game is released in PDF on or around March 20th, 2014 with the print version following as quickly as I can arrange the layout work.  In the meantime give these rules a try with your current fantasy RPG, it won't be quite the same but hey, any time you can work 'Avast ye scurvey dogs!" into a night's game, it's all good. Best, John Miller

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
