Village Backdrop: Ashford (5e)

A 5e Compatible GM's Resource by Creighton Broadhurst

Once a prosperous village, Ashford now stands as a decayed shadow of its former self. A year ago, it was a busy place; its streets and gardens echoing with the sounds of life, love and commerce. Then the stranger came and death followed upon his heels. Plague had come to Ashford. In his wake, he left the hacking coughs and pain-filled moans of the dying and the wails of the survivors mourning their dead. Over half the population died, and many of the survivors packed and fled.

A few folk yet dwell in Ashford among the abandoned, deserted homes of their friends and neighbours but it is now a quiet, mournful place. Weeds choke its abandoned gardens and untilled fields. Wolves, foxes and other less natural predators gnaw at the weathered bones filling the village’s open plague pit. The surviving villagers are distrustful of strangers, shunning them whenever possible, and few find welcome, cheer or solace in Ashford.Village Backdrops are short, richly detailed supplements that each present a single village ready to insert into almost any home campaign. Perfect for use as a waystop on the road to adventure, as an adventure site themselves or as a PC’s home, Village Backdrop present the details so the busy GM can focus on crafting exciting, compelling adventures.

This book is designed for use with the 5th edition of the world's most popular role-playing game.

This product is a Dual Format PDF. The downloadable ZIP file contains two versions, one optimised for printing and use on a normal computer and one optimised for use on a mobile device such as an iPad.

I noticed that there is an area 7 and 8 in the woods, but they are not mentioned. Does anyone know if these are connected to another Raging Swan thing, or were they just omitted after the art was commissioned?

Hi! I've checked my copy of the village and I can't spot the references you mention. Can you give me a page reference so I check this for you?

Yes sir. Check page three. Top most left part of the map, in the woods. There is a 7 and 8 in that area. Curious about that!

Blimey! You've got good eyes. I've never noticed those before--I can only assume the cartographer put them in by mistake...I mean to allow the GM to add his own tagged locations to the woods. I'm sorry they slipped through the development cycle.

Glad to hear I wasn't seeing things. I'll go ahead and add something spooky. Haha.

Is this a conversion of the PF Ashford pdf to 5e or does it include the additional material on Ashford provided in Village Backdrops I?

I used the Ashford PDF as a base for the conversion, removed the stat blocks and replaced them with handy dressing tables and suchlike (as well as generally tidying up the text). The version in VB I is essentially identical to the normal version of Ashford so you shouldn't notice much difference beyond the obvious mechanical changes. (And, of course, if you don't like it we have a full money back guarantee on all our PDFs, which you can learn more about on our site.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
