Convicts & Cthulhu: Ticket of Leave #2

French Occult Explorers Lurk in the Shadows of 18th Century Australia.

The early days of the Australian colonies coincides with a period where France and England were bitter enemies -- sometimes at war. Although England has stamped its ownership by founding the settlement of New South Wales, the continent of Australia is a vast place and the French are known to be lurking in the seas nearby, conducting their own "scientific explorations". But do the French have more sinister intentions for the new land? Are there plans for a French colonisation? And what of the rumours that some French officers assigned to these exploratory missions swear allegiance to a peculiar occult society? Is there some particular reason that France is especially diligent in acquiring territories in the South Pacific ... are they searching for something in the "lands down under"?

Tickets-of-Leave are small self-contained additions to the Convicts & Cthulhu setting for Lovecraftian roleplaying in the early penal colonies of Australia. Each includes a selection of game elements which can either be used collectively as a thumbnail sketch of a mini-scenario, or can be used in isolation to provide pieces that enhance a scenario of your own invention.

Ticket of Leave #2 provides details about the French exploration of early Australia and the fear and paranoia inspired by the threat of imminent French colonisation of remote corners not yet settled by England. It includes some hints about mysterious French Occult interest in the new continent, two new profession templates, and a scenario sketch.

This is not a standalone product, but relies upon the Convicts & Cthulhu setting also published by Cthulhu Reborn. The Convicts & Cthulhu core book is a lavishly illustrated 96-page sourcebook available in both PDF and print as a "Pay-What-You-Want" title.

Convicts & Cthulhu is designed to allow Call of Cthulhu Keepers and players to run scenarios and campaigns set in the penal colonies of early Australia. It particularly targets the historical period from 1795 to 1810.

Full disclosure: Australian colonial history and Lovecraft are two of my hobbies, so how could I fail to love this setting? This second scenario for Convicts & Cthulhu outlines the Great Power politics between France and Britain, especially [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
