The Mystic: A Dungeon World CC

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Play the Mystic, a martial artist trained in ancient magic.

The Mystic is a Dungeon World Compendium Class, featuring:

  • Fiction-first moves Includes a wide variety of original moves, inspired by Monk/Mystic archetypes in fantasy, film, and rpgs. Not your typical playbook/collection Class Warfare moves.
  • Quality > Quantity Minimal amounts of flavour text and superferous moves. Every move builds the fiction. Straight to the point CC.
  • Mechanical synergy The Mystic moves were designed together, to provide a feel of thematic cohesion. Advanced moves build directly off the starting moves.
  • Minimalist design Comfortable text size, DW-styled design, and ample whitespace to preserve readability
  • Support future developments With many projects on handthe success of small releases such as these will give me the ability to release my dream list of CC's.
  • Open Source The layout used is avalaible as a free Google Doc.

If you have any questions/feedback about the CC, my future plans, don't hesitate to reach out: me@jdlindsay.com

The Mystic is an early look at the content that will be avaliable in Heroic RPG - an upcoming fantasy story game, with a focus on robust character creation and effective storytelling mechanics.

This is a pretty cool Compendium Class. I think it does a credible job of putting a basic Wuxia character into Dungeon World. Warning: this is a Compendium Class. Not a full Playbook! It says that on the tin, but I'm not sure it's clear enough. A few complaints:

1. A single page of content for $1.50? Seems like maybe you should bundle a few of these together to make something like 6 compendium classes for $4. (In case you think that's an unfair complaint, I put out a 28 page e-zine with original art for $2 an issue. Admittedly my zine is probably underpriced. So my perspective may be abnormal.)

2. There is no link in the PDF to the aforementioned Google Doc. How do we get it?

3. The PDF is so locked down I can't even print it! Please release a version with no password locks or at least mention the lock in the advertising blurb. I think people are going to be annoyed when they can't print a copy for their players who take this class. (FYI. Unlocking a PDF can be done for...See more

Hey Troy, thanks for praise, and the detailed feedback. I'll try to address everything in a couple bullet points:

* I sincerely hope no one mistakes this as a playbook. I've detailed this in the title, the top of the description, and the preview. Any suggestions on how to improve this?
* In terms of just pricing, this may be the case. My thinking involved what are in my eyes many poor quality playbooks for $4.00-4.50, and determined $1.50 should be enough for one page of quality content. What would you suggest as a price point for a single CC? I am planning to bundle these together at a steep discount when finished.
* I've included a link in the new PDF. Thanks for catching this! I had it originally in the description but DriveThru doesn't allow external links. ):
* Deepest apologies for my mess up on the last note. I am still angry at myself for missing this. I think Google Drive did this because I locked the preview I sent to folks. Let me know if you can print the new version,...See more

This is a super gracious reply. Thank you for not getting defensive and for being concerned with my happiness re: your product.

You did indeed say it's a compendium class, but I thought it bore restating what that meant. No mistake on your part there.

Cost is subjective. I guess it's hard to price something this small. The bundling later should solve it.

Thanks for releasing an unprotected version! That takes care of my complaint. I'll leave an edited version of the root post in the reviews.

Thanks again. As for my zine. Uh. I forgot this account was under my real name!! I use a nom-de-plume for gaming stuff generally. You can get my zine at http://www.patreon.com/rayotus.

No worries. I'm really grateful for honest/brutal/truthful feedback. This was my first rpg product and was anxious to get it right. Seems like mostly everything is sorted. Someone on Reddit had some more feedback, so I'll be updating again midweek with syntax improvements.

And many thanks for the review! Means a lot. I like the Wuxia idea, although I'm not familiar with the archetype so I'll have to do some proper research. Any recommendations on media to watch/read?

Haha, I suspected you were the eminent Ray Otus of Plundergrounds. I've been subscribed for 1-2 months, and you should definitely consider offering a higher reward tier. Your work is incredible and makes my offering definitely pale in comparison.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
