Shanghai! The city goes by many names: The Pearl of the Orient, the Gateway to China, Nevernight City, Demon City..."the most dangerous city in the world." The sixth largest city in the world, it is the center of culture and industry in China, and the hub of espionage and its close cousin, crime.

The Queen of the Orient is a guide to a pulp fiction Shanghai of the 1930s, where kung fu gangsters battle gunslinging cops, Japanese and Communist spies plot, and adventurers come looking to make their fortune. Made for use with the Ubiquity system that powers Hollow Earth Expedition and other role playing games. You do need a copy of Hollow Earth Expedition or Leagues of Adventure to use this supplement. This e-book comes with a huge, period-authentic map of the city from 1935!

I'm wondering if the map quality issue has been cleaned up since it's been a little over a year and no follow-up post from Scott. I'm also curious what the size of the book and the page count is.

This is a lovely book...except that the maps are unreadable due to fuzziness. The maps in the pdf and the physical book are all too fuzzy to read/use. So, it is a problem with the pdf that is being replicated in the physical book. Fortunately, the pdf comes with a stand-alone map of the city that is quite readable/printable. Pity the book is marred by these useless maps.

You are correct, sir. One of the issues we've been trying to address is how big the PDF files are when you have them on a device; it affects render speed and can be really annoying, especially on older machines. We've been trying to keep the layouts clean, with decent sized typeface (let's face it -- a lot of us have glasses in this hobby!), and file sizes small. The maps were a casualty of that.

The print file was originally not scaled down like the PDF, but there was an issue while setting up print on demand that necessitated the use of the PDF file.

Hopefully, you got some utility out of the book outside the maps?

Perhaps you could make good versions of the maps available as separate files?

I’ll get on that as soon as “Sky Pirates of the Mediterranean” is finished production. I’ll make certain to comment here to let you know when it’s done.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
