Darkwood: Feudal Britain RPG (Classic Reprint)

VintageCollection.pngPrecis Intermedia brings back this classic roleplaying game of legendary adventures in Feudal Britain (originally published by Tower Games).

It began in 1066. The Norman Army smashed English resistance and conquered Britain. As the armies fell to the Normans, the commoners and farmers rose up against them in defiant and bloody resistance. All who have stood against the Normans have been crushed and trampled. The people gave up hope and accepted a life of virtual slavery.

Out of this time, a band of heroes will emerge. Their fame will bring hope to the oppressed Anglo-Saxon peoples, striking fear into the corrupt hearts of Prince John and his agents. Heavily based on the legends and exploits of Robin Hood, this roleplaying game is set in the Twelfth Century, with the players' own adventures contributing to a mythology that grows over time.

Features:

  • Quick-playing rules require only a single twenty-sided die (d20).
  • Historical information for Feudal Britain and its inhabitants, as well as overviews of the surrounding lands and Europe.
  • Mythical elements like witches, spirits, demons, and Gentle Folk.
  • Two adventures to get you started.

This classic reprint of Darkwood has been recreated from a mix of the original files, scans, and other sources. The textual content is virtually the same (with a little editing), the layout has been remastered, and some of the artwork has been replaced for higher-quality reproduction. Includes the same content as the softcover version of this classic reprint.

Also, check out A Medieval Monastic Mystery and The Curse of the Templar, free adventures for Darkwood. The Lord of Laxton also provides a longer adventure experience.

BRETT'S EDITORIAL
For those familiar with the genreDiversion games, the rules in this book are similar in thought, but everything revolves around a d20 roll. This means that characters are very easy to create, and skill checks and combat run pretty smoothly. The setting information is mostly historical, with the supernatural elements leaning more towards the fantastical. In the end, it's a good vehicle for running your own Robin Hood games, or anything else in a historical feudal Britain setting, with some potential supernatural elements.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
