Edge of the Wilds - 100+ scenarios for rural adventures!

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to "Edge of the Wilds", a collection of over 100 plothooks and storyseeds for RPGs!

"
This is the frontier, where the rule of law is weak and men cower in the shadow of terrible beasts. What side will you choose as civilization and the wilds battle for dominance?"

This book contains dozens and dozens of scenarios and scenario ideas for adventures in rural settings, suited for nearly all imaginable kinds of fantasy RPGs. If your game has villages and towns surrounded by wilderness, you will be able to run these scenarios!

Our plothooks and storyseeds (around half a page in length each) are ideas: a collection of lawless gangs, rampaging beasts, rivaling settlements, incarnate powers of nature and much much more. A few adventures are straightforward, but many come with a twist, designed to lead to more trouble and more action for your average adventuring party!
Each adventure introduces the basic story: a villain's plan, the most important NPCs and how things might develop once our heroes become involved.

Use these scenarios as they are written, or let them inspire you and grow your own, custom adventure from the sprouting seed of our story!
Most of the scenarios are written with a medieval-ish fantasy setting in mind, but are easily adaptable to ancient, victorian or even more modern
rural settings.

Each adventure seed is focused on one or more of the four large categories of RPG scenarios:
exploration, diplomacy, investigation and combat.
Many adventures are designed for
low to mid level characters, but you can also find quite a few for veteran adventurers and even some for legendary champions in this collection.

Rural adventures are extremely well suited as starting points for RPG campaigns. They have their own distinct strengths and traits to capture the “flair” of this frontier environment. In this collection you will find a short guide with the most important tips on running plots in the rural setting.

Last but not least: we have included a list of 20 short encounters that can be used in any
rural area and are especially well suited to be thrown into your campaign as a bit of a distraction, a small tidbit of interest that gives your player characters a little room to breathe...but at the same time holds the potential for much more!

"Edge of the Wilds" is the second of ten booklets in our "The Thousand Trails" series. Each book focuses on a specific adventure environment, and gives you over 100 adventure ideas to play...and trails to follow.

"Dark Cities" focuses on urban areas and the dangers that hide in the shadow of civilization.
"Ocean's Call"
gives you adventures in fishing villages and harbours, on rivers, islands and the mighty ocean itself.
"Realm of Leaves"
speaks of adventures in the depths of ancient forests, from sweltering jungles to snow-covered boreal woods.
"Crown of Winter" presents scenarios in mountains and other cold places of the world, where the forces of ice and rock reign supreme.
"Marshland Mists" is focused on adventures in swamps and bogs, places of decay and mystery.

In the meantime you can also check out "Invisible Hands", a book about factions of all kinds. It entails not only a thorough guide on how (and why!) to create factions in your games but also holds twenty fully fleshed-out factions of different kinds that you can directly put into your RPG setting! "Pawns in a Greater Game" adds a complete rulesystem for playing as whole factions instead of individual characters and also adds the stats and rules for each of the factions presented in Invisible Hands. "Unseen Strings" adds another twenty detailed factions, plus holds all the rules you need to play these factions according to the system presented in Pawns in a Greater Game.

Our newest release is "Lost Dice", a simple, narrative RPG system suited for all settings! It is based upon a dicepool mechanic that makes every single roll count even in the long run, and gives the players the chance to decide how much they want to risk for victory!

What is the difference between v1.11 and v1.3c?

Which is more recent?

Hi Matthew,

Version 1.3c is the most recent one. The difference is fairly small though, we mainly just fixed some small mistakes and did some minor layout changes. Always striving to improve bit by bit.

Any chance of bundling the existing Thousand Trails?

It's pretty likely that there will be a print on demand (and also PDF of course) option for the first five books of a Thousand Trails together within the year. We are currently looking into that.

Seems like a nice series of simple scenarios. I like that the format suggests levels and length, as many books just list the scenario and theme. I will buy both books today for my roll20 5th Edition campaign. I look forward to more releases.

Hi James! Happy to hear you like the books!
When running many of the scenarios for D&D keep in mind that I intentionally wrote them to be applicable in a low magic, human-centric world as well, so please don't hesitate to add more supernatural elements, different races/monsters and more magic to the storyseeds. Many seeds should be very well suited for that.

I run a low magic, low fantasy 5th Edition D&D game via roll20 weekly, so this is perfect, thanks.

Any plans for Sci-Fi book on the series? Or a Post-Apocalyptic theme? Thanks

Hi Unai!

We haven't planned the whole series out yet. The first five books will very likely be focused on fantasy. Not sure about the second five yet. We definitely plan on releasing ten books in total (100 plothooks in each, hence the "Thousand Trails") and it could very well happen that the second five books have more sci-fi, horror, modern or post apocalyptic themes.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
