Space 1889 - Mars (Sourcebook)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Ever since telescopes have allowed it, mankind has observed the surface of Mars with its massive canal structures. But only when Thomas Edison set foot on the Red Planet was the truth revealed: Mars is home to a culture whose ancestors built the canals. They used them to distribute the water of the polar caps and thus saved the dying planet from the inevitable. Their deeds have enabled the Martians to live on for tens of thousands of years.

Edison brought news from this world where many new civilizations waited to be discovered, all with their own customs, rites, beliefs, and world views. The British, the Germans, the French Commune, Belgian corporations, the Japanese and the Russians all landed on Mars to found their own colonies. What brought economic boons and technological progress to the cooperating city-states, instead brought exploitation, oppression, and war to the rest.

In this source book, we offer you an overview of the planet, divided into eight great regions, and its people:

Join the British colonial efforts and the war against the militaristic Oenotrian Empire in the Central Basin, compete for allies or fight for resources!

Experience the Eastern Basin (almost) as it once was before the human colonists arrived: Full of intrigue and border skirmishes between the strange city-states.

See for yourself the inhuman practices of the Earth invaders in the Western Basin, where Martian rebels unify against the exploitation and the tradition-bound Tossian Empire slowly rouses from its slumber.

Travel with the Caravans across the Eastern Desert, the region marked strongest by the great fall, and search for ancient relics and secrets.

Rejuvenate trade in the Western Desert along the Tea Road, the source of all cultural and goods exchanges between the people of this region, which is not unlike the Silk Road on Earth.

Travel the Northern Polar region and bring order to this lawless desert with nothing but your honor and your trusted muzzle loader.

Or end up in the Southern Polar Region, where one man, alone with a blade, some technology worshipped as magic and an iron will, can rise all the way to warlord.

Many canal cities are described in detail, as well as the backgrounds of the Martian culture, travels and history. You will receive an overview of Martian technology with numerous pieces of equipment to enrich your game with. Dozens of creatures and eight sample archetypes (with a focus on Martians) are presented ready to play. And finally, an entire chapter is dedicated to the many secrets of the Red Planet…

The dying Red Planet is waiting for your footprints in the dust!

This book is written for the Ubiquity version of the Space:1889 RPG.

Some chapters in this book are based on information from the earlier booklet Marvels of Mars (Flora and Fauna of Mars, 21 pages; and Martian Technology, 6 pages).

Does this include a map? The issue with previous editions of 1889 has always been the absence of a decent map of mars.

Are these books going to get a reprint? Most of them seem to be out of stock everywhere now and I'd like hardcopy if possible.

Heyho Paul, as Ulisses is currently working on a new edition of the game, reprints of these books are unlikely.

Is any or all of the material in this book copied from the earlier GDW edition or Transactions of the Royal Martian Geographical Society? Cheers.

While much is of course based on the original material (but generally not copied), there is loads of new stuff as well. :-)

Thank you for your prompt reply! I just got my hands on the Core Role book and am eyeing the other books. I think I'll get it when it become available in print. Second question. Are the things that are out of print out of print forever? Like the GM screen?

The only thing that is currently out of print is the GM Screen (and there is currently no plan for a reprint). All other things should still be available via Modiphius.

The only thing missing was a section on airships but maybe that will come in a seprate book. Overall, it was quite good. When will we see the Savage Worlds edition?

A large part of this book is reprinted from Marvels of Mars. Mainly the Flora & Fauna, and the sections on Ancient Technology.

Around 10% of the book are based on the ealier booklet. That is due to the genesis of the books: Marvels of Mars was written way earlier, but focused solely on the two topics flora/fauna and technology. The Mars sourcebook was written later, but first in German (where there was no translation of Marvels of Mars). Therefore, the needed information for flora/fauna and technology was adapted from Marvels of Mars.

While we informed the Kickstarter backers for Mars about this during the campaign, you are correct that this was not clearly visible until now in the description. I've added a sentence in the description. Thanks for the tip. :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
