Altered Carbon: The Role Playing Game - Dataslate Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to the Dystopian Cyberpunk Neo-Noir World of Altered Carbon

The human mind is nothing more than digital code –Digital Human Freight– saved and stored in a Cortical Stack, advanced technology that allows you to “re-sleeve” your entire consciousness into a new body.

In the official Altered Carbon role playing game based on the hit Netflix series, wear any body you can afford, transmit your mind across the cosmos in an instant, and, if you’ve got the credits and political cachet, re-sleeve time and again for centuries, accumulating enough wealth and power over the millennia to become the societal equivalent of an immortal god.

Welcome to Bay City

Included inside the Core Rulebook, you’ll find:

  • Rules to play Archetypes ranging from Socialites to Soldiers.
  • Explore the expansive metropolis Bay City in both its criminal Underground, and vaunted Aerium world of the immortal meths.
  • A highly customizable Trait and tech system.
  • Storytelling-focused rules, that help create dramatic tension inside of combat and intrigue outside combat.
  • The means in which to transfer your characters digital consciousness into a new sleeve should they come to a tragic end.
  • Opponents ranging from unhinged augmented thugs to cunning and manipulative political adversaries.

With the prize of immortality at your fingers, the question is, what price will you pay for it? What stories will you tell?

Your neon-drenched adventures await!

Don't let my anger of my previous post fool you though, they did an AMAZING work with this RPG.
Lately I have found that a lot of RPG's have mediocre art and graphic layout, I guess now concept artists are at a premium. But it is NOT the case of Altered Carbon RPG and its whole line. They're a marvel to look at.
They're also a great read, I haven't been able to put them down and every page gives me story ideas.
So while I still disagree with their choice to go the "traditional" Cyberpunk route by focusing on "The City" rather than the rich colonial world offered by this unique setting I'm still very impressed by this game and I will certainly have a lot of fun running games with it.

The book is beautiful. I'm not a big fan of how they mixed the books and the tv show, I know that when I will run a game it will be only based on the books, as in the Envoy Corps is a Protectorate unit and Takeshi Kovacs was born a long time after the Quellist Rebellion.

What chafes me severely though is that they couldn't be bothered to knock off a list of planets from the Altered Carbon universe. Seriously??? There are dozens directly named in each of the Morgan novels, with some background attached most of the time. The action of the two other novels don't even touch Earth and it is said more than once that Earth is stuck in the past and the real action is really in the colonies. Have they even read the novels????
OK I get it, the show has been the impetus behind the renewed interest in those great novels but couldn't they have taken some time to put down at least an index of other planets? I'm not asking a sourcebook on each one.

I did it myself for the Hammerverse (David Drake's...See more

With a regex on every caps word on the two first novels (Altered Carbon and Broken Angels) it took me just a few hours to generate this list of planets, corporations and military units. (I added the CTAC Praetorians even though they don't exist in those novels but that's it). Took me the time between posting my previous post and right now:

Earth (Bay City, Osaka, Birmingham, BAMA, etc.)
Mars (Bradbury, Syrtis Major, Syrtis MINOR)
Harlan's World (Millsport, Newpest, Mitcham’s Point, Hirata's Reef, Coral Castle) (in the Glimmer system)
Glimmer Five (in the Glimmer system)
New Kanagawa
Innenin
Nkrumah’s Land
Hun Home
Latimer (Latimer City, Portausaint, Soufriere, Limon Highlands)
Sanction IV (Landfall, Sauberville, Bootkinaree, Indigo City, Evenfall, Dangrek, Danang, Thaisawasdi Field, Kempopolis, Rayong, Shalai Gap, Wacharin Straits, Suchinda)

I own the original rulebook and I also, as Joshua S and Adam J has already said, would like to know what difference there is between the original edition and the new dataslate one - the difference in page count seems to point to the fact that there is indeed a difference, but the full-size preview graciously included do not show the index, so it is difficult to gauge what it can be.

The dataslate edition has links you can use to jump around and the layout is slightly different, hence the page count.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
