The Oneiric Hinterlands

ADD TO WISHLIST >
The Oneiric Hinterlands is a sandbox campaign inspired by fairytales and folklore and set in an enchanted woodland.

Deep in a hollow hill in the ancient Woldwood lies the Dream Gate: a beachhead for a war against reality that never came to pass. Its custodian, Lord Nuada, has disappeared, and now the oneiric energies have begun to warp the very fabric of the world.

Nuada's subjects - the sapient animals called the Danu - are too distracted to care. Following his disappearance, a civil war ended in a magical catastrophe, and the ascension of cruel predator overlords.

Meanwhile, the 'Goblin King', deposed by Nuada, has returned from Underland. Sending his fungal minions into Nuada's abandoned hill palace, he seeks to retake his throne.

Nearby the dwindling human colonies are still dealing with the aftermath of their war with the giants two decades earlier. Rumors circulate that the leader of the giants may have returned from death, and now treasure hunters arrive to disturb things best left buried.

Recently, I soloed my way through Oneiric Hinterlands (144 pages, DriveThruRPG) an adventure for Old School RPGs. For this, I used Torch & Sword (79 pages, free). I soloed this with the FlexTale Solo Adventuring Toolkit (613 pages) and the Bing AI Copilot

. So, Lena continued her adventures with five of her friends. They were on the way to Owlhaven (a quest destination) and had been travelling through grasslands. On the first day, they encountered a nomad who gave them quest #2. On the second day, they recruited a lost magic-user (Torlos). That night they had to fight skeletons. Lena was wounded but was soon healed. On the third day, they reached the quest #2 destination, but the information they had been given was not valid, so the quest could not be completed.

That night the PCs were attacked by ghosts. Seren the cleric used her prayer wheel of Gond to destroy the ghosts. On the fourth day, they reached the town of Esben. A rich woman gave Seren some money and asked her to...See more

Question for the author which is unnecessarily complicated because I’m trying to avoid spoilers:
On page 50 you can rescue an NPC and on page 132 it outlines the rewards for rescuing the NPC if you defeat a bad guy (whose stats also appear on page 132). But the bad guy is a type of entity that won’t stay dead (page 129 bullet point 6).
This isn’t a problem for the other entities of that type because you are unlikely to encounter them again, or stay in their vicinity. But for the rescuer to get the benefits of the reward on page 132 they need to hang around.
Is there a means of permanently defeating the bad guy that I’m missing?

Hi Ryan. Thank you for the question. The baddie in question is ruling as the NPC's regent and the populace are unaware of her imprisonment. If the party rescue her and bring her home, then there will be a confrontation with the baddie. If the party prevails, the truth will be out and the baddie will most likely flee the area to plot his revenge (perhaps he will decide to ally with a Black Monastery full of undead ninjas? or find the tomb of the undead Warlord Tokugawa (-:). Even if the party leaves the area, you may allow the NPC's husband / wife to visit the Empire each night when they sleep. I hope that helps.

No current plans for a POD, but I've had good results from online printing services (I use DoxDirect in the UK).

If you are looking for help laying out, I’d be happy to help make a pod version of this a reality.

Out of curiosity, what's preventing you from enabling POD with the source files you already have?
I'm asking because I would very much appreciate a dead-tree version to run it from. And printing it myself or at a local store is possible, it's just not the same thing as having a nicely printed and properly bound book.

Thanks for your interest. I'm afraid it significantly adds to cost and difficulty, and there are a range of technical issues as well as issues around pricing/risk. I mention some of the reasons in this blog post: https://unsoundmethodsblog.wordpress.com/2022/03/25/print-copies-of-the-high-moors/

But this rpg.net thread gives a fuller picture: https://forum.rpg.net/index.php?threads/publishing-behind-the-scenes-what-goes-into-the-decision-on-whether-or-not-to-make-a-product-available-print-on-demand.910936/

I'm also not convinced that the DT POD options are significantly better in quality than a good quality online print shop POD of the pdf. I've been happy with my print shop hardbacks, but you may have a different view.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
