ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The Age of Shadow is a complete fantasy role-playing game based upon the OpenQuest system. As such, the game utilises a simple percentile rules mechanic to resolve most actions (making it suitable for beginners and veteran role-players alike), and is set in a mythical world of elves, men, and fearsome monsters.

Within the book you will find:

• character generation rules
• a comprehensive skill list and combat chapter
• rules for two different types of magic
• a wide variety of situational rules
• a complete monster section
• a two page character sheet

Note that more information concerning to the world in which the age of shadow is set can be found in The Age of Shadow: Campaign Guide (also available from Crooked Staff Publishing).

Well, I totally expected this to be digest sized.
An interesting surprise to get slightly taller than industry norm and slightly thinner than industry norm in size format.
Pity it is not a hardcover option. The tome thickness is comparable to a lot of other products out there doing the third party variation game.

The physical purchase option is a great deal in this case. it would cost me more to have it printed and spiral bound even though page count is not very high at about 80 pages. Page size means all the charts maps and forms are also sizable. But to print anything out, you might need to request greater than 8.5x11.

A very happy purchaser here.

Does taking a reaction to dodge voids aiming?

While 'aiming' you can do nothing else. So if you dodge out of the way of a sword swing, you're no longer aiming your bow at a target (with regard to getting the bonus).

Love the book in general, and while new to D100-systems, I like the OpenQuest foundation here. That said, as in OQ 1e (maybe 2e as well, but I don't have that), there's very little said about shields except that they exist, their size and ENC, and that they can be used to parry.

While OQ3e adds some details, what rules have people been using for shields? Penalty to hit for opponent? Added armor? I'd love to hear any thoughts :-)

R.A.W. = Shields (or an off-hand) weapon give you an additional 'parry' per round.
However, the benefit of having a shield is that it can parry against larger weapons than a weapon of a similar size category.
You can also attempt to parry hand-thrown missile weapons with a shield (plus, if you have a large shield, it imposes a -25 penalty on ranged attacks ...assuming it's facing the right direction ;) ).

Thanks for your clarification, Kristian! I'm going to be ordering your setting books in paper, having enjoyed the core rules so much. OpenQuest is a great foundation for an RPG system!

In the main rule book, in the animals section, SIZ 7 for a crocodile looks a bit on the small size. SIZ 26 would be medium sized, with SIZ 50 would be a large one

Yeah. The animal list needs some work (since the game is based on OpenQuest, I just used the same animal list for consistency).
If I ever get around to making a 2nd edition (which I have been thinking about) it will be one of the things I redo :)

No worries. It is a minor thing easily rectified if anyone has some MRQ beastiaries. I 'd like to see some more 'Neath the Shadow stuff, rather than a second edition, as the first edition is mighty fine already. Some elaboration of the city backgrounds from the Campaign Guide would be good, with some scenarios set in various cities (or just one city).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
